For those of us graced with not having hydrants or few hydrants.
Do you mostly use a Tanker Shuttle or Portable Pond???

Both. The way we see it, the tanker is a water hauler. If it isn't moving to get a refill it no being used. Do we sometimes have tankers "stacked up" waiting to dump?, yes we do.
We normally have some long shuttles that could not be done with LDH.
Last year we were MA to a wood treatment plant fire. We used three drop points with two ponds each, and jet siphons between the ponds at each point. Tanker shuttle was approximately six miles one way. We pulled tankers in from as far as fifty miles away. Over a 24 hour period we moved over one million gallons of water which supplied three master streams flowing 500 GPM each. The town's water system could not keep up with demand but was used to supplement one drop point. Fire was contained to the original building of approximayely 75' x 200'. Fire was caused by a boiler explosion.
This was an operation that involved VFD's, Career Depts and a Federal Dept.

I've seen a few of each type in action (working smoothly and a complete gaggle-f***) and it makes me very glad we have hydrants!
A tip of the helmet to you brothers that don't get to take your water supply for granted like we do.

Boy I would KILL for more Hydrants!!! We are at about 25% hydrants....but it never fails, all our fires are no near a hydrant. In the 4+ yrs on the department I have only had to hit the hydrant once.

are whole area is hydranted, however in the older part of town if it were to ever really get goin with the dinky mains there we would I think need to augment it with some shuttling.

The only time we use either is at drill and that is just using our portable pond. We have probably 95-100% hydrant coverage. We keep the portable pond on our 1978 Tele-Squrt, but there has been talk of pulling it off and putting a 30+' Extension ladder on there instead.

We use both shuttle and portable ponds. If we are not going to use a lot of water but more than we have we may use one of our tankers as the tank otherwise our neighboring department will drop their portable tank to use.
As a department that has to do all the annual checks on our hydrants (We are a volunteer dept.-oops paid percall) I would just as soon go back to shuttleing water. I don't have to pump and flush any hydrants that way:D

Wow, too many tankers. If we have to set the pond we usually don't have the luxury of tankers waiting if the fire is working. We usually can pull a couple tankers from mutual aid plus ours but the shuttle can be as long as 10-12 miles round trip.

As explained to me by an ex-Army Ranger that I worked with years ago, it is when the situation has moved beyond a regular ol' run-of-the-mill "cluster-f***" and is in the rare category of being one of the most f****d up things you've ever seen :D
(And here's hoping I don't get smacked by the WT for these implied vulgarities  )

We use the tanker shuttle and drop tank a lot. We only have hydrants in town and a few scattered in the country. We train on using the drop tank and drafting more than hitting hydrants. Any idiot can hit a hydrant:D Even us officers!;)
We always drop the tank unless only a small amount of water is needed besides the engine tank or for supplying the brush truck at grass fires. Several mutual aid tankers do not have pumps and have to use the drop tank. This keeps the tankers on the road and helps improve water supply. We also will use the tanker shuttle in town were we have smaller mains and poor flows.
Another good topic by the Buckeyes!

If memory serves from my Military past; A Gaggle F*** is when you have multiple Cluster F**** occuring simultaneously. A CF is worse than a SNAFU but it has not progressed to the FUBAR stage. Once you have gotten to FUBAR its time to send the Chief home so the FF can sort out the problem unimpeded.:D
