Truck Response Survey to a Fire

Ok, lets see what the typical response it to a single Family Dwelling fire.

Remember the truck do not need to be fully staffed...just what are you assigned truck to this type fire.

Scenario: Toned out at 1730 for a report of a fully involved SFD home. PD is on scene reporting heavy smoke and flames. Wind speed is 10mph out of the NW. Conditions are 70 degrees and sunny..its summertime.

We don't have true "alarm assignments".

If it's our district, we send 1 Engine, 1 50' Telequirt, 1 Ambulance, 1 Mini-Pumper, 1 Rehab Unit.

Our other station would assist us with 2 Engines, 1 Ambulance, and 1 Mini-Pumper

A Neighboring FD would send us 1 100' Platform


This is all done by automatic Aid.........

Three engines, one tower, one OIC, for a structure fire.

I have to add that if you're waiting for the cops to get there and decide maybe they might have you come have a looksee, you're waiting too long. The vollie department I used to be with ditched that policy while I was there. We had a basement fire, and they sent a cop to "check things out." The moron burned his hand on the front doorknob! This caused him to not go in, because he couldn't get the door open (it was locked.) When we got there we saw smoke coming out of the window joints and under the doors in little puffs. Very heavy, dense smoke all over the interior. If that cop had got the door opened, he'd have probably dies in the backdraft that would have taken place. The village reevaluated their "have the cops check it out" policy after we pointed out that they almost lost a cop because he was doing something he's not trained to do.

For any reported structure fire, we send:

2 Engines
1 Squad
1 Command Unit

If staffing is available-
1 Rescue (Ambulance)

on Automatic Aid we also get:
2 Engines


If staffing is available-
1 Brush Truck
1 Rescue

Plus we usually get a County "Life Squad" ALS unit

Around 1730 it would probably be staffing of around 15-20. Earlier in the day it may be as few as 10 firefighters & officers. 3 AM would have 30+ firefighters, officers and a "white picket fence" :D

Sector assignments usually go like this:

1st arriving Engine: Attack and/or Rescue (if confirmed victims trapped)

2nd arriving Engine: Attack (if 1st Engine is Rescue) or Water supply and Primary Search

Squad: Ventilation and secondary search

3rd arriving Engine: Backup line

4th arriving engine: RIT or assist as needed.

We also don't have "alarms", if we need more than this initial assignment, it's requested on an as needed basis (truck, additional engine, etc., etc.)

Oops, those assignments are generic interior attack ones.

For your fully involved scenario, we would probably use the monitor and 2 1/2" handlines off the first 2 engines. The Squad and next two engines would handle exposure protections. Obviously, search, ventilation, etc. wouldn't be needed.

Our respone to this is From Station 1- 1 Engine, 1 Pumper/Tanker, 100' Ladder, 1 Squad (Ambulance) and when off-duty/volunteers showed the other tanker. Station 2- 1 Pumper/Tanker plus 1 Auto Aid Pumper/Tanker

and thats if we ever get a fire, but we have had enough dress rehearsals the last few days eh?

When I wear the other hat every third day we send:

4- engines (4th Engine is RIT)
1- ladder truck
1- heavy squad (this crew usually puts the fires out ;))
1- Battalion chief
1- safety officer
1- ALS life squad

Wow! I believe I forsee a whole lot of pestering about ambulance ETA's, etc. in your future from a certain Heavy Rescue Squad :p

we run engine, truck, engine, Special Ops (792 POS), Medic Unit Safety Officer, and an auto aid engine from the "other guys" !

Its not that we are afraid of the red devil at 7's, its just that those damn EMS dispatchers are sending us out on all those goof runs all the time we miss all the good fires. Who in the hell is screening these calls anyway :p :D ;)

Lay in? All our fires can be put out with the water can.

And if it can't, it won't matter to me 'cause I'll be up in Monroe working at the time :mad:

Anything we can get out the door. Then we would probably call for mutual aid, and possibly have a Department stand by at our station.


Well we dont get many structure fires, the last structure fire we had we had a garage fire, this is what all was there.

1 of our engines
1 mutual aid engine
1 of our tankers (well we only got one)
1 mutual aid tanker
1 salvage truck
1 ambulance
1 staff car (For hot drinks)

We also had a neighboring Department stand by at our station with one of there trucks.
