I'm looking to become a firefighter here in Jersey and I'm a little confused about the hiring requirements. I've done some research and found out about the written and physical tests, but I'm not sure when the tests are going to be given next. I got the impression from the state website that another test won't be given until sometime in late 2005. Is this correct?

I'm also unsure of the residency requirements, if any. What are the NJ requirements? Do you need to live in the town you work in? If so, can you live somewhere else during the application/testing/waiting process, be hired in another town, and then move to that town?

One more thing... are there any "top choice" towns? Are there any towns or cities in particular that everyone hopes to get? FYI, I currently live in Clifton... anyone know anything about the Clifton Department?

Thanks

Do you need to live in the town you work in? Going by the number of guys that work in Northern Jersey paid departments and live by me, I would have to say No on living there.

One more question related to hiring in NJ...

I just found out that Montclair held their own exam just two weeks ago. Had I known about it, I would have definitely applied for it. How can I find out when towns that hold their own exams are going to be giving these tests? Is there some sort of directory or something? Or is there at least a list somewhere of towns that hold their own exams so I can look them up and find out when their next scheduled exams are taking place?

If you are taking the state test and wish to be hired by one of the bigger dept's. You most certainly have to be a resident of that city/town by the exam date. You may move away after you probation period usually.
Your best bet to find out about Clifton is to talk to the PIO at thier HQ. Call in advance and set up an appoinment.
As far as finding out about other dept's that don't use the NJ's state test. Try the FMBA website and compare that with who uses the state test. Then contact those dept's about thier hiring info.
Good luck.
