There's something to persistence and constantly checking back on the website. Out of curiosity, I checked again tonight to find this note:
Planned Date of List Establishment From Firefighter Exam #2043
The FDNY expects that list #2043 will be established for use in time for the May 2004 probationary firefighter class; the date of list establishment will depend on the FDNY's ability to complete the required number of medicals and background investigations for those eligibles on the top of the list. When the list is established it will run concurrent with firefighter lists #'s 7514, 0532 & 7029. Eligibles on the previous lists will be considered ahead of the eligibles on list # 2043.
So basically there moving the date up from late November/early 2005 to May... that's good news -- right?

Yes it is good news for the guys, that are on the #2043 list. What is happening is, they are getting towards the end of the list (7029), plus that fact that some applicants do not have to requirements to be hired, so what they are going to do now is: Hire off all 3 lists at once, because 7029 expires and can not be extended on NOV.15th 2004 (lists are only good for 4 years from date of establishment) So, when it expires they will be hiring ONLY from the 2043 and the last promotional exam (which I believe only 100 or so EMT personell took). The people at the top of list 2043 (those with the extra pts) will be hired at the same time as those on the 7029 list. So my advice - Keep out of trouble (because yes, the investigators do check into your background and will find something its they're jobs), Stay in shape because the stairmaster for the medical is a bitch, especially when you have to stay at a specific heart rate, and fianlly make sure you have the college and the EMT or CFR... GOOD LUCK - hope to see you guys in one of the upcomming classes! If any of u guys have any questions about the medical and the pychological (spelling?) please feel free to e-mail me @ Muttly08@optonline.net.

OHMYGAWD!!!! (Yes, that is good news!)
I have been trying to keep updated on firecareers.com's website regarding FDNY but have found that the posts on there are mostly west coast fire department related! (Nothing wrong with that mind you, so no posts going off about east-coast/west-coast.)
Pitched in the $$$ just recently for firehouse.com and WOW!!! I have been more updated on FDNY's list than I thought I would be at this point.
Okay, special note to anyone trying to get the veteran's points:
SEND IN YOUR LETTER REQUESTING VETERAN'S CREDIT TO DCAS NOW!
I had been waiting for a letter like the one's sent out about getting residency credit for the veteran's credit. Hadn't received a similar letter, so I called DCAS and found out you must send in a letter requesting this so the investigator assigned to your background check will know to look for it.
Still waiting on my reciprocity for EMT, but that should be through in no time.
Thanks for your insights guys! Hopefully more positive posts to follow.
Realizing this dream may actually come true!
Brett
PS: WHEW! They got it in time.

More good news -- It looks like they're planning on hiring more firefighters this May as well... the latest from their website says:
The FDNY is planning the following Fire Academy schedule of new probationary firefighters:
200+ new FF's on March 8, 2004
200+ new FF's on May 25, 2004

Hey guys, I got some more info today. One of my buddies that is on list #2043 got a letter a few days ago that wants him to report to some place in the city for a background check and I think some type of interview. I have not got the whole story just yet but I will get back to you. This friend has 10 extra points for residency and veterans credit so he is obviously at the top of the list. Just figured that I would let you know that the ball has started to roll.

I'm pretty sure that to claim veteran's preference you need to be a NY state resident.

I guess so.. but he is a NY resident so it should not matter.

My friend (100 written, 100 physical, 5 pts city res) received paperwork to report to the city this Tuesday. I'll get the lowdown from him and fill everyone in. I'm sitting on 97, 100, and the city res, so I hope I get called soon...

Well I can tell you guys this much, if you scored 99 and 100's you WILL be hired, maybe not in the May class but you WILL be hired, its a long, mentally exhausting process, especially for those of us who want the job in the worst way, just be patient starting or keep working out and before you know it = you'll be getting hired... Good luck guys!

You do not need to be a NYC or NY resident to claim Veterans Credit. If you are a veteran - you are a veteran. It has nothing to do with what state you are from.
However - you can only use your veterans credit once in your career. Meaning if you take a promotional exam in the future - you can't apply your veterans credit again.
