My department is having a promotion test coming up in a few weeks. I have been on my department for a few years now. I have taken all the classes to meet the Lt. requirements and then some. but my problem is the oral board!!!! We had a promotion a while back and I was number 2 on the written, but I bombed the interview. Can anyone help with techniques or ideas to make this time??

Most candidates don’t do enough testing to get good at it. After investing all this time and money for the written test that can be weighted as only forty percent of the total score, most candidates do little or nothing preparing for the remaining sixty percent in the interview process.
The interview portion of the promotional is the most important. It can be as simple as an oral interview including a fire problem or a full-blown assessment center. The assessment center can be made up, but not limited to a combination of an in-and-out basket, fire problem, oral board, a presentation to a panel or group, peer counseling, conflict resolution, leaderless group discussion, or writing an essay.
What many candidates don't realize is the assessment part of the testing process is all about presentation skills. If you can't present your education, experience, and ability someone else will steal your badge again.

Thanks Capt. Bob,
Two questions for you form my last test/oral board. These are the questions that I think killed me on the board.
If you were the Fire Chief, what would you change about the department?
If the department was given $250 donation, would you spend it on fire prevention or equipment?
For the first one I answered staffing (Combo-dept running 2-3 man engines).
Second one I said prevention, I can't remember what I said.
Capt.Bob, what are your thoughts?
Thank you in advance.
