No...They are still on 2075 I think. BUT....I got my results about 3 weeks ago...I had a 100% (I am already working for EMS)....List #13. There was a letter that came about 2 weeks ago stating that they only selected up to list #3.

Brother Bravo,

I Think the list will be out sometime in Nov. The New Chief of EMS John Peruggia was appointed last week,so it will take some time........

Vinnie B,
I am also on list 2077. Can you tell me what you know about the agility test? I am also wondering what to expect in the academy? How long do you have to be on the EMS job to take the promotional test for Firefighter? Any idea about these things?
Good luck to you and thanks in advance for the info.

Yeah...I can answer all this. I got hired last June. The agility test is EASY!....There's a stair mill event. 40lbs vest for 2.5 minutes at a rate of 60 steps per min...(if i remember right). Then the next event is a arm flex and strength test. You have to pull up on a bar that has a steel cable connected to a computer. The cable doesn't move. It determines force exerted in lbs. Then you do a "peddle machine". While on your knees you turn what looks like a bike thats up-side-down. There is a force of 50 lbs on the thing and you have to peddle real fast for I think 2 minutes. Then there is a Leg press which is the same as the arm test. The test is very easy. Sorry to say but look at some of the people on EMS...if they can do it...anyone can. The Academy is 8 weeks of cake....as far as...its nothing like the FDNY Fire Academy. They don't scream or yell...sometimes you do push ups...but its nothing really to stress about. The Academic part is REALLY GOOD. You recert in CPR and as an EMT. There is a week of EVOC, a week of Operations, and a week of field rotations (you are assigned to a Battalion for a week and practice your skills). Then there is the Final exam and graduation. At the Academy you are taught how to be an FDNY/EMS EMT. The training is really great. They teach you well above what is taught anywere else in the state. 1 day before graduation you get assigned to one of the 6 Divisions or to Communications. You then meet with the Division Chief and they assign you to a station....meaning....if you get assigned to Division 2...the bronx...you can be assigned to either the 15th, 20th, 3rd..etc Battalions....

For the promotionals....You HAVE to be "civil service"...ie the E&E test for 2077. Once you have the CS status you can take the test. You can be CS for 1 day and be eligible to take the promotional, but just a note...there are ALOT of "EMS haters" in suppression (even more in EMS...self haters)...Once you become a firefighter you have 1 stike against you because you are a probie....if you came from EMS then you have 2 strikes...and if you came from PD....you have 3.
:D :D

Your right about NYPD job IT SUCKS !!!!!!!!Eight years after taking control of the City's EMS the Fire Dept.is beginning to knit together its fire & Emergency Medical operations in the ways that could have fire commanders taking on EMS administive duties. The changes are beginning at the top with the new Acting Chief of EMS Chief John Peruggia who was appointed last week. The Ultimate goal is for Fire,EMS & Police working together & having closer relationship.

Vinnie B,
How long did it take for you to get on once you got your list number?
Is the hiring quick? Or is it like the fire department where you could pretty much wait forever?
Have you heard when list 2077 will be out? Do you think that November is a realistic time?
Thanks for the info.

I picked up a copy of The Chief today as well. It says that the posting has been cancelled. Does anyone have any information on this? I applied under civil service exam 2077. Does this mean my list is cancelled and they aren't processing the paperwork. What about my $35 that may get me no where? How does this work????????

VinnieB

HA!...You just "donated" your $35! If a list is canxd....forget it...you'll have to wait to the next one....But that doesn't mean you can't get hired....EMS hires provisionals....then you get Civil Service Status later,

I called citywide services today to inquire about List 2077 for EMS EMTs. They told me that the list has not been cancelled. List 4029 that was stated to come out on Sept. 1st was the list that has been cancelled. So if you applied for 4029 you will be out of luck. However 2077 is still valid at this time.
Good news for those of us on the list:)

Today(Sep.09.04) Daily News

The city is taking the wrecking ball to a state-of-the-art ambulance station built just four years ago in Harlem for $3.2 million - in the name of better health.
City officials said yesterday that FDNY Medical Service Station 16 at 510 Lenox Ave. will be demolished next year to make way for a planned $225 million expansion of Harlem Hospital.

Eventually, a bigger, better EMS station - at an extra cost to taxpayers of $4.2 million - will be built within the expanded Harlem Hospital campus.

Health care advocates said rebuilding a perfectly good ambulance station was a tragic waste of scarce public health dollars.

But city officials disagreed.

"It's a good thing," said Kate McGrath, a spokeswoman for the city Health and Hospitals Corp., which runs Harlem Hospital. "We're responding to the present needs of the community."

When then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani cut the ribbon on the 6,000-square-foot facility in 2000, he described it as on "the cutting edge of EMS station technology."

But different mayors have different priorities. Giuliani, never a big fan of HHC hospitals, was eager to prove he could take over EMS services and improve ambulance response times.

Mayor Bloomberg, by contrast, has worked hard to build up the city's public hospitals, and Giuliani's old ambulance station goes against his plans to expand Harlem Hospital by 150,000 square feet, officials said.

FDNY officials stressed that although Battalion 16 would have to move to temporary quarters while its new facility was built, there would be no lapse in EMS service to the neighborhood

I just wanna know how you got hired as a provisional? Back in April/May, I begun my investigation and passed the Physical Agility and Drug Screening, but then the person in charge of hiring told me that because I was'nt civil service, the rest of my investigation was on pause for a few months, so I got on 2077 in June. Do you know any other guys in my situation?

The city does some weird stuff...I got hired back in May of 2003. I was on the list since '99...I had to defer about 5 tims because I was in the military. Everyone in my TOP class was provisional but 1 guy. Usually the info you get from Peggy Quinn is accurate....No I don't know anyone in your situation.....Like I said...the city does strange stuff....especially when hireing people.

You have to draw 3 pics...a house, a tree and a person. If you have a really good sense of humor the testing time goes by really fast....I got laugh out of most of the questions. The background check is simple and straight foward....

I got called for my ems agility test. I was wondering what schedule FDNY EMS works. I heard it is similar to the NYPD schedule which is 5 days/2days and 4days/3days. Is this correct? I am trying to find out what the schedule is and what the shift hours are.
How is the FDNY EMS union? Is it as strong as the UFA and the PBA?
Thanks for the info.

VinnieB
10-01-2004, 11:58 PM
The work schedule is a 4 Platoon, 3 Tour rotating system...A, B, C, and D. Tours 1 (12-8); 2 (8-4),and 3 (4-12). D has every weekend and holiday off...this is what you start in at the Academy....but after that...forget it...its mostly for adminstrative people....The rest you have right...forinstance...say you start on Monday you'll work till friday...then have SAT/ SUN off...back in on Monday...then you work till Friday again..but have SAT/SUN/MON off...back tuesday....Ok..that's the perfect world....NOW..he's how it really happens...You'll end up getting these lovely things called Forced Mandations...meaning you have to work for some schmuck who baged in and forced you to work another 8 hours....and they will do this a couple of times a week....or you can face charges. You can count on being stuck on the bus 16 hours a day for 5 days a week...not to uncommon. The Union is Local 2507, and DC-37..well...you pay the highest dues in the city about $32 a pay check or $64 a month and you have the lowest wages, and have Sh&T for benefits....the union is weak...but up and comming...they have only been a seperate bargining unit for about a year...prior to that they were in with candle stick makers, hairdresser..etc. The Union is not as strong as the UFA or PBA....and the UFA and UEP members...well there is anomosity....EMS workers and cops get along better together then Firefighters and EMS workers...our own Commisioner calls us "Ambulance Drivers"....and the Mayor doesn't think we exist...besides the city would rather out source our jobs to over paid scabs with less training......which leads me to the training...the best EMS training in the world...this is true..8 weeks of intense study. If you can't pass a certain phase...you get fired....study, study, study. You may think you have what it takes now..but wait till you get there....show off and the instructors will make you look dumb. The instructors are good to go...if you get hired..listen to them and take what they say as gospel.

Vinnie, so far you've made alot of good and bad points about the department, but I just want to know if overall you enjoy the job or not. I'd hate to think that FDNY is anything like AMR. Also, do many of the cops you know enjoy working for the NYPD?

VinnieB
10-02-2004, 02:18 AM
To be honest Retro.....I hated working for EMS.....I left the job in January and went to work for the FDNY/CSU. There are good people in EMS though. Some are really good...but a good number are fat, lazy, tubs of crap, that think the world owes them something. The instructors in the academy are first rate...no complaints there..except for 1 guy..the rest are great. Good Bosses are few and far between....if you get on try to go to Battalion 15....the Diamond of the 2nd Division. Probalby the best house in the City. Great bosses, great medics and great EMTs. FDNY is nothing like AMR....I had worked for Metrocare prior to the FDNY so I understand you "pain". AS far as the cops question...I really do not know many that enjoy thier jobs. The city has done what they could to ruin both EMS and PD...and if you are reading the papers...FD is on its way in to the toilet too.

If you get into EMS...use it as a stepping stone. They will make you better than any other EMT or Medic in the country...Hands down....but its not a career. YOu have to do 25 years before you can retire...they do not have a contract as of yet, the three quarteres diasbiltiy LODI sucks nutz...and the pay sux. In a way I can understand why many FDNY/EMS workers think the way they do....1.5 million runs a year and only 2500 EMS Workers....all for a mere..400 dollars a week.

Do a search using FDNY and you'll get some results. This one gives an idea of the list size and where you may fall....

Last Saturday I got a packet in the mail from the FDNY Saying to come to Brooklyn on Jan. 22 for my Physical agility test for list 2077. In this info. There is a packet that says Civilian candidate investigations with a list of stuff to bring in. also a packet that says Comprehensive personnel document. Do I need to fill it out and bring it with me. (I am from out of state) (ohio). Also on the Civiliam candidate investigations page it says to bring a valid NYS drivers licence... I thought that I didnt need one to take the test? My last question is if I pass the physical agility test do i have a good chance at getting hired? or is there no way in knowing?

VinnieB
01-18-2005, 01:46 AM
Yes...follow the instructions that came with the packet. Fill out everything that is says....You have to READ over EVERYTHING! I do believe you need a NYS Drivers Lic....and a NYS Tech/Medic card...or the National ones...(doesn't matter...you'll be training thier way)...You can be a resident from anywere...but you do need a NYS DL. Call 718-999-2179 and ask your questions....tell them that you are an EMS Candidate first....and remember...its NY...be very nice to them...or they will NOT help you...(that's just the way they are...just be courtious)...and as far as being hired...who knows...there may be a class going in sometime this month....its hit or miss with EMS....it all depends on how much money the City has for EMS and how many people the FD says they need....but that's all for the Beancounters.....it will take time...but if you want to do it...then get hot on the package and do everything that is needed...and in the time alloted...1 mistake can set you back an entire class....which could take YEARS....

NYPD ESU has been around since 1926.

Since the late 1940's 2 Police Officers in a Radio Emergency Patrol (REP's) Vehicles they have been handing emergency assignments that you would normally have a FDNY Bn Chief and aide , one ladder and one engine company. That's 3 FD Bosses and 12 Firelighters. ESU handles emergency jobs and also patrols the streets and issues violations, summons and arrests.

One ESU 2 man unit in a normal day will have 100 times the impact on the public safety then a whole FDNY Battalion.

Go to the statistics of the FDNY and see how they are go on non-Fire Assignments and Medical emergencies. http://nyc.gov/html/fdny/html/stats/citywide.shtml

And these are the guys who complain about their own EMS.

Hello all. This is my first post here and I know it's an old thread, but I wanted to get some input from you guys and this thread fit the best.

I'm currently a county firefighter in Austin, Texas, however, I've always wanted to be one of the best and I'm working on getting up there.

My goal is suppression. I have an application in and will be moving up there in January for the test and for the residency points.

Here's my question, though: I have been cleared for everything for an EMT position and I am just waiting to see if I get selected for the next academy, slated for the 2nd week of January. I planned on taking this job to increase my EMT-B skills and hedge my bets on getting hired for suppression. Granted, I know I will not be able to take promotion until the NEXT hiring process, which will probably be 3-4 years down the road, but it's also a thought.

However, after reading the posts on here and the decidedly bitter AOL FDNY*EMS page, I'm having second thoughts about taking the EMS job. I am thinking that perhaps I should take a desk job (cringes) and just focus on getting the suppression gig.

Normally, the thought of working outside of the Fire/EMS world is not an overly exciting one, except when reading some of the posts on here and talking with a few ex-FDNYEMS folks. Although any time spent helping someone in need is a worthwhile endeavour, the general feeling of being unwanted by suppression guys and city officials, on top of working like crazy for poverty pay, is starting to make me think twice about it all.

Not that I'm unwilling in any way to work with any of these hurdles, I just question my survivability (with being from out of town) and my ability to stay sane and not get burnt out.

What do you experienced guys think? Is it worth the experience, or should I take a desk job and wait for suppression?

Thank you all very much. I appreciate your time and input.

Stay safe.

Brian

How often does FDNY EMS give their civil service exam and is it difficult tto be hired off the civil service alone without getting on the job first as provisional?
