I am in a rare position where I haven't decided who I am cheering for yet. I would dearly love to see Larry Walker win a World Series ring (he's Canadian you know) but I would also like to see this curse thing put to bed so Yankee fans would shut up for awhile.
I guess I will see who is playing with the most heart and go from there.
Or maybe I'll flip a coin.
Should be a good Series and the most important thing is.......
THE YANKEES AREN'T THERE!!!!!!

This would seem like a good time to write a song, please add a verse and maybe together we can write a classic. The tune by the way should be obvious.
Start spredding the news
I'm leaving today
I want to be a part of it
At Fenway Park
These vagabond shoes
Are longing to stray
Right to the very heart of it
At Fenway Park
I want to wake up in a city that's playing ball
With Schill on the hill, it's a classic this fall
Take it from here.

I've been an Yankees fan all my life. Grew up watching Maris, Mantle, Peppitone, Ford, Berra, Boyers, and others starting in the late 50's.
BUT, I'm a good sport. Congratulations Boston.

Historically, I'm with you. Mickey Mantle was the second sports hero I worshipped. The first was a football player named Jackie Parker who you probably never heard of. The Yankees of Casey Stengel were in my view the greatest baseball dynasty of all time.
I am very clear in my view that I don't dislike the Yankees, I simply hate George Steinbrenner's business approach, which I think is bad for baseball. The Yankees, their history and their fans are great for the game.
With that in mind, I wouldn't poke fun at Yankee fans if I knew they couldn't take it and I am comfortable in the knowledge that they will give it back threefold, once they have the chance.

You've said this before. But one fact is very clear. If all sports teams followed George's business model, there would be more parity among the teams.
Let's use the Green Bay Packers as an example. They might be in the smallest market in sports. About 102,000 in the city, classic midwest small town. Lambeau is built in the middle of a quiet, middle class residential neighborhood. It is a really cool place. Lambeau has about 65,000 capacity. Sell out every game.
You know what? They have another 65,000 on their waiting list. Enormous fan support that allows them to put a winner on the field and to continue to generate fan support. They invest their profit back into the team. That is the key.
Boston is a large market team that invested in the money back into the team and the result is a team that is one win away from a World Championship. They will have to invest heavily in the team this year, too.
Chicago is a large market team that has two teams that historically do not invest back into the team. The result is one mediocre team and a good team that year after year doesn't have the tools to pull it off.
The New York Rangers invested heavily in big name players. But their commitment was simply to sell tickets. Their ownership is disinterested in whether they win or not, as long as their are 17,000 pairs of butt cheeks there every night. That lack of a commitment to winning negates their investment.
George demands one thing...to win. If all the owners had the same commitment to winning, pro sports would be alot more fun.

"You've said this before. But one fact is very clear. If all sports teams followed George's business model, there would be more parity among the teams."
If all teams followed Georgeanomics there would be no sports because there simply isn't enough money.
"Let's use the Green Bay Packers as an example. They might be in the smallest market in sports. About 102,000 in the city, classic midwest small town. Lambeau is built in the middle of a quiet, middle class residential neighborhood. It is a really cool place. Lambeau has about 65,000 capacity. Sell out every game.

Totally invalid comparison , the NFL has a salary cap, if MLB had a salary cap we wouldn't be having this discussion.
"Boston is a large market team that invested in the money back into the team and the result is a team that is one win away from a World Championship. They will have to invest heavily in the team this year, too.
Chicago is a large market team that has two teams that historically do not invest back into the team. The result is one mediocre team and a good team that year after year doesn't have the tools to pull it off."
Many wrongs don't make a right, fact is we have one team contracted this year (Montreal) and at least 2 teams on the critical list.
"The New York Rangers invested heavily in big name players. But their commitment was simply to sell tickets. Their ownership is disinterested in whether they win or not, as long as their are 17,000 pairs of butt cheeks there every night. That lack of a commitment to winning negates their investment."
That's a great example, look where hockey is right now as a result of teams like the Rangers and the Red Wings. Don't think for one minute that MLB isn't closely watching the happenings in the hockey dispute.
"George demands one thing...to win. If all the owners had the same commitment to winning, pro sports would be alot more fun."
If all owners practiced Georgeanomics, pro sports could not survive. Period.

The NFL also shares it's television revenues equally between all the teams.
These sports owners have millions to buy a team and pay for the team's slaries, yet the vast majority want John and Jane Q. Public to pay for the stadiums that their teams play in.
Bob Kraft dug deep into his pockets to build his own stadium in Foxborough.. all he asked of the State was to make traffic improvements on US Route 1.
More sports team owners could learn a lesson from Mr. Kraft!

LOL...
Somehow, you know we're now doomed this series to go to seven games just because it's the Sox :D
As for Kraft and the Patriots...what can you say but that's the way to build a team! 21 game winning streak, players saying they'll take less then the free agent market would bear just to stay there, and their "Streak? What streak?" attitude.
GeorgeWendtCFI

Manofire...vaild points. But there would be a balance and withmore winners, more people would go to see the games, generating more income. I have to look up the states, but I know that alot of the seats at Yankee stadium are very reasonable.
I would also bet that if we were to talk about stadiums we would all agree. I have no idea how any city can justify subsidizing a business venture that is sure to be popular and profitable. Public money shoul dnot be used to build a stadium for a private team.
this argument is going on right now in NYC. The Jets want the City to dump, I think, $600-800 million into a stadium for them to play in. The twist here is that they are claiming that public money is justified because it would mean the Olympics would probably come there. They also want to tie a Convention Center to the Stadium to justify the money.

I think we can find some common ground in a belief that the Green Bay Packers are doing something very right. The Packers are the exception to every rule in sports franchising. The team is community owned, they play on a field not named for any mega-corporation and they play on grass (not that kind of grass). They support the community which supports them and the only shareholder they are directly answerable to are their fans and incredible fans they are. I've heard stories of Packer fans showing up early to games to help sweep snow off seats to assist stadium staff and help the club save money. (I would love to hear from anyone who can confirm the validity of that statement)

Just out of curiosity, considering that prior to this year, no one had ever come from a 3-0 deficit to win a Playoff/World Series, I wonder what the odds would be that it could happen twice in the same year?

Well Bostonians, now you're just another fan base. No longer "long suffering", no longer lengendary. Yes, the Sox did it in style, coming from 3-0 down to win 8 straight and become world champs.
Gone are the Buckys, the Buckners and the Boones. Gone are the endless cold winters waiting for pitchers and catchers. Gone are the long hot summers of being one trade short of complete.
When you look back on this you'll likely feel a little sad, but for today I can say to you:

Red Sox Nation will never be just another fan base. Because we do believe, we will always believe. I was thinking last night, as they described the trade and sale that sent the Babe to NY, that if it wasn't for the 1918 Red Sox - the Yankees as we know them wouldn't exist. :D Kinda twisted, but just a thought.
When do pitchers and catchers report anyway?

What a remarkable year it's been, especially from Northeastern Connecticut...
New England Patriots: Super Bowl Champions, plus now record smashing 21 games-and-counting win streak
Univeristy of Connecticut: Men AND Women's NCAA College Basketball Champions, an unprecendented feat.
Boston Red Sox: World Series Champions thanks to the greatest come back in major league history that turned into the longest post-season winning streak in MLB history.
What a year!

With regard to hockey.
It would appear that there is a lot of pressure on the players union from their members to consider a realistic salary cap. More and more players are starting to speak up, not necesarily against the union but for revisiting the salary cap issue. There seems to be more and more of the players who are making closer to the league minimum who are realizing that a salary cap doesn't hurt them as much as it does the guys making the big dollars and the lock-out hurts them much more than it does the big money players. They are also realizing that if franchizes fold as a result of this that they are far more likely to be hurt as a result of fewer jobs.
There ma be hope for NHL hockey this year yet.

Those guys at MLB don't know nuttin' about scheduling and drama and all, do they? :D
As if watching the Red Sox win the World Series on TV wasn't bad enough, the Yankees will have to watch their rivals raise their World Series flag next April in person.
As first reported by the Daily News' Bill Madden during the ALDS, the Yanks will travel to Boston for the Red Sox's home opener on April 12.
That means that the Sox will raise their World Series banner with Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and the rest of the Bronx Bombers in attendance.
Who knows? Pedro Martinez might even be accepting his World Series ring while wearing pinstripes.
Boston will play its first game as defending champs in the Bronx as the Sox visit the Yanks for their home opener on April 4.
Making things even juicier, the teams, according to the preliminary schedule given to all 30 teams, will finish the season with a four-game series in Boston from Sept. 29-Oct. 2.
Anyone else thinking their could be some late October nights already on tap for next year?
