Hello, just wondering what department you are getting hired by. I am in the final stages with Stratford. Looks like we may be in the same academy.

Stigmatism means to have normal eye sight.

Astigmatism, on the other hand, is when there is unequal curvature of the cornea (although, it could be other surfaces), which prevents light rays from focusing clearly at one point on the retina, resulting in blurred vision.

Which do you have?

Visoion is usually on a department by department basis.

I would highly recommend that you consult with NFPA's list of Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, also known as NFPA 1001. Specifically, look at 2-2.7.1 "Eyes". The subsections may have shifted from the copy which I have, however, you should be able to download the most current information directly from the internet.

If you have the slightest concern for a medical problem, have the leading expert in this field of medicine (no, not just your family doctor) evaluate your condition. If they feel you’re fit for duty, have them give you a letter.

If the situation comes up during your medical, then and only then, produce the letter. The goal is not being DQ’d during the medical and having to fight the doctors later to get back in.

One of our candidates knew he had an unusual reading of his heart when an EKG was taken . He went to the heart specialist that was a household name in the LA area who gave him a letter that found him fit for duty. Sure enough the EKG revealed the concern, the letter was produced and this candidate works for LA City.
