E75---- How's it going? Boston is tough to get on but not impossible. You must take the state civil service exam next year [usually offered every two years] to qualify for up coming employment.Similar to other major cities, it helps if you are a veteran . Boston residents get preference, but to qualify you must live in the city for 1 year before the exam date. The federal mandate of 1 to 1 affirmative action [ for every 1 white FF the city hires,it must hire 1 minority regardless of his exam score]has been eliminated. It obviously helps if you score a 100% on the exam but this doesn't guarantee employment.GOOD LUCK if you're going for it!

That appears to be the announcement for the last Statewide civil service test, given in April 2004. It(911 hotjobs) is incorrect . You must have taken this test to be placed on an eligible list for hiring. It is given every two years with the next test being in April 2006. To get hired by Boston you must be a resident of the city for at least 12 months prior to taking the exam. They'll investigate thouroughly. Veterans preferance in Massachusetts is huge.It is extraordinarily difficult to get hired by Boston as a civilian. Anyways, my sources tell me that Boston will be hiring 3 recruit classes in a row starting fairly soon. I hope this helps.

For Boston, being an EMT means nothing.

Dennis, you need to live in Boston for at least 1 year before the exam date in order to claim residency preference. You can apply for employment there if you want but the city has a residency requirement for all its firefighters. No residence,No points,No job!

Only firefighters hired after 1994 have to live within the city of Boston.

Actually, I have documentation that dates back to 1984 stating you must live in the City of Boston. This was back when a FFOP started at $291.00 per week OR about $15,000 per year. The only reason I have this is because I saved it from when I took the exam on 11-23-85!!!BOSTON has had a residency requirement (good or bad) for a long time.

For hiring, yes your are correct. It dates back to at least 1971 . After hiring only those who were hired after 1994 must live in the city permanently. This was collectively bargained by the union.

Maybe it's time the union negotiate again. It has become EXTREMELY difficult to afford a mortgage or rent with the salary offered for the job! Seems to me, Boston wants to require you to live there/to work there but doesn't want to pay what it takes to do so.

my dad worked on the boston dept. for 13 years. it is extremely difficult to get on. if you are not a veteran, a legacy, or a boston resident... then forget about it.

A friend of mine just got on and started the academy about 2 weeks ago, a veteran and claimed residency even though he didn't score so well. You can't get around the residency thing either by using another's address, they do investigate everything pretty extensively.

Just like everyone else said. If you are not a veteran or resident forget it. I took the test 4 years ago from out of state and scored in the high nineties and wasn't even close to getting a job because I didnt have any extra points. Any resident or veteran WILL be placed higher on the list than you because you ar not either of the two. You score a 100 a veteran with a 70 will get the job first just keep that in mind. Hope this helps.

Do you get any points added to your test for having your bachelors degree?
