What is the process? I did alot of reading on the fire side but I'm looking to see which I could do and consider what goes into each or if I can go for both.

Applying for the medic is pretty easy. I think all you do is call an 800 number FDNY has and you leave your name, social security, medic number, and address. They will send you a package adn yuo fill it out and send it back. After that it is a process I am unsure of. But I am pretty sure thats how they do it. You can apply for both id\f you want. I know that you used have to do 3 years on EMS before you can take the promotional. I am not sure if that is the same anymore. Go to the official FDNY website and check out paramedic under employment info. Thats the best thing to do.

This is general information from their website. I think you initially get 'provisionally' appointed if you simply call their number. If you take the test and are appointed, then you are considered a 'permanent' employee. It's once you have this permanent status that you can take the promotion to firefighter exam. (Not sure if this is of any interest to you or not.) Either way, once they call you up, I think you are then assigned to a TOP class, which by many accounts is the best EMT training you can get. Good luck!

Is it just me or does it seem like its really easy to get in as a medic? I'm planning on once I finish the degree I'm working on right now to go to Drexel for medic school, then applying to chicago, fdny, etc. The promotion to FF sounds great and I remeber reading about that but tell me its harder then it sounds. Also, I know the site lists it but do they higher EMT's to or just mostly medics?

I think getting on provisionally is relatively easy, but becoming a civil service employee is pretty hard. I think if you do a search on here, there was a similar thread a few months back. If I recall, most people don't get their civil service status, and are thus unable to take the promotional exam. I'm just relaying what I've heard, however. I don't have any direct experience here.

While I'd love to be a firefighter in fdny I have the same passion for the medical side of things. I'll be looking into all the cities though when I get out of college and medic school. 78's would be a close neighbor to 90's I wonder if we've run any jobs together here in bucks.

Call the number...get on the list...file for the civil service E&E test, get hired, have a miserable time, take the promotional....you don't have to wait 3 years....you only have to be civil service, and not provisional.....
PS...the job SUCKS....if you want to be a medic and actually make money...and not collect food stamps....go to Jersey or work for one of the Private Hospitals in NYC......I works EMS for 4 years....IT SUCKS....
Good Luck....

Vinny without divulging too much...what "changes" are you hinting at? Does it involve the fire side?

I just got called for a physical for EMS. Does anyone have any idea of what comes next as far as the process goes. I know the job sucks but I am waiting for fire at #3300 and figured could be of some benefit. If anyone could give me info on how long till your working from this point(in EMS), or on how long and what it entails to become civil service status that would help. Thanks

Vetoes EMS death benefits bill. OK Sanitation worker death benefits bill.
Pataki vetoes EMS death benefits bill -Albany, New York
Gov. George Pataki has quietly vetoed a proposal that would have granted city paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians the same death benefits as police, firefighters, sanitation workers and correction officers.
Citing a "glaring inequity," state Sen. John Marchi (R-Staten Island introduced the bill last year with Assemblyman Peter Abbate (D-Brooklyn).
They pushed the measure by noting that 3,000 city emergency service technicians respond to some two million life-saving calls every year.
"A serious inequity is now apparent," read a memo from the lawmakers supporting the bill.
The EMTs work "side by side" with cops and firefighters -- "but, if killed, even in a common disaster, their death benefits are radically different from one another," the memo said.
It noted that the city's emergency medical service (EMS) workers were merged into the city Fire Department in 1996, under former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
The memo said it is "well documented" that Fire Department medics are frequently injured though, it noted, few have died, only six since 1994.
"But when these deaths occur," the bill memo said, "they are just as devastating to a member's families as when a sanitation worker, police officer, firefighter, correction officer dies."
The bill was delivered to Pataki in the last 10 days of last year. The Republican governor had 30 days to sign or veto it this year, after which it could officially die from what is known as a "pocket veto."
The pocket veto was announced yesterday.
Pataki spokesman Andrew Rush noted the governor, in November, signed a bill to enhance accidental disability benefits for EMTs and paramedics.
"We appreciate the efforts and the sacrifices the EMTs make, which is why we signed the bill," the spokesman said.
He said Mayor Michael Bloomberg also opposed the bill the governor vetoed.

Vinnie,
thanks for the info. I think i will give the EMS gig a shot. I currently work as firefighter/EMT on an engine and know how bad it would suck to be on the bus all the time, but ultimatly it could benefit me in reaching the end goal (fire). if you have any other info about the job good or bad please send it my way. talk to you later.

Asuming I apply as a paramedic in the future what sort of wait time is there, I've seen the fire side for most cities be a few years to never(chicago).
