I have assembled a list of the Washington DC fire departments. There are about 5000 people employed in municipal, federal, airport and industrial fire protection.

Loudon County, Prince William County, Henrico County, Hampton, and Va. Beach would all be good choices that pay fairly well. You don't want to come too far west, because on our side of the Blue Ridge, the pay isn't so well. I make $24,838 in Staunton. I'm not sure what the pay rates would be in the Southwest though.

??????

Why didn't put in applications for the Chesterfiled, Henrico or Richmond Fire Depaertments??

They were taking applications awhile back!

You need to take the time and visit their web sites.

www.co.henrico.va.us

www.chesterfield.gov

www.richmondgov.com

These departments start around 34,000 per year.

Plus, you could always check other departments in the state.

Norfolk, VA Beach, up in NOVA.

Good job...Henrico is by far the best in the state of VA...Fairfax is good as well...I'd put Henrico County and Fairfax County at the top of the list, no doubt.

Henrico County is a fully accredited full Fire Service organization...and at they are the only county in the COUNTRY that has their police and fire departments nationally accredited.

Chesterfield...blah...Richmond , yes, too much big city red tape. Stay away from them.

Henrico also just got a brand spanking new burn building.

FYI, I just took the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority (MWAA, Dulles and National). The HR guy said that there were no openings for FF/EMTs but several for FF/Medics. In the state of VA, "medic" means EMT-I/99 or EMT-CRT or EMT-P. Still, if you apply, you are on the list for a year.

Henrico currently has a Recruit School in session.

Recruit School #49 started March 9 with Graduation scheduled for August 8.

There are 30 Recruits in the Class.

Anyone currently testing or in the process for Arlington County?
Heard there is a class going in June. Just wondering if anyone heard anything?

I was.

Passed the written, the CPAT and the Background Interview with the Fire Marshal.

Then got the offer from Henrico and advised Arlington that I was withdrawing from their selection process.

Last I heard, they had not finalized the date of the class yet.

Good luck man!

Don't really know, but Henrico is a combination rural & urban county. They have areas that are ISO 2 & areas that are ISO 9.

For comparison, Chesterfield county ranges from 4 -9. They were trying to get a better rating, but not sure if it ever went through. I know my home owners has me at a 4. Richmond City is a 2 citywide.

Roanoke Fire-EMS

They received their accredidation in 2002. It's a small(100,000 plus population)city in south west Virginia. It is nestled within the Blue-Ridge Mountains. A beautiful area to say the least! The cost of living in very reasonable and the schools are very good.

They operate with 12 engine co. and four ladders, and eight ambulances. They operate with an iso of 2.

If you like seasonal changes and not a lot of snow....this really is a great city!

It's one thing to have the desire. It's another to understand to be ready when the opportunity presents itself by learning how to take the all important oral board interview which is usually 100% of your score to be hired.

I had the opportunity to present a seminar at a local college last recently. Everyone quickly learned what they thought was prepared and unique fell short of getting top scores, especially those candidates who volunteered to sit in the hot seat to give it their best shot. This also applied to many in the packed room who gave their .02 cents as the questions were opened up to the attendees.

Even though hundreds of firefighters will be hired in the next months ahead, it proves what many on this board have tried to get across. Learn how to take an interview because it will be the deciding factor in whether you will gain a badge or not.

Here's a NYC candidate who made the leap to Virginia:

Over 700 people applied for this position and only 27 were hired. I am one of them thanks to you and Rob! This feeling of accomplishment feels like it will last a lifetime, it's an amazing feeling. It doesn't matter where you are from, what part of the country you're in, how old or tall, or fit you are, without these tools you have provided I'd still be a phone man in NY. Now I'm achieved my dream job and proud to say I'll be a firefighter in beautiful Virginia Beach. Thank you. Tim

You can find more on testing secrets in the Career Article section from the Jobs drop down menu just above this posting.

We are not hiring now, and I don't think there is anyone in our region (Augusta, Rockingham) that will be hiring until July, from there you have slim pickings. Also, you have to participate in a regional CPAT and written test to be eligible for employment.

I did not see posting again for the open process.

I took the Oral test on April 8th, but did not hear anything yet about moving on in the process. This department takes awhile to get back to yeah. Slow process....

Since you live in Louisa County you are closest to Hanover County and Henrico. Richmond is reasonably close and Charlottesville just got finished hiring. Albemarle County is supposedly building a new station on Pantops so they will be hiring soon.
