FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 8, 2005) – A Jackson County man has been arrested and charged with third-degree arson in connection with a fire that burned 65 acres of woodlands and destroyed a garage on April 6.
Christopher K. Stewart, of Tyner, was arrested by Kentucky State Police Trooper Robert Morris, assisted by Jackson County Constable Alvin Webb.
Arson Third Degree is a Class D felony, punishable upon conviction by one to five years in prison. Stewart was taken to the Jackson County Detention Center. Bond was set at $50,000 and a court appearance was scheduled for April 25, 2005.
The fire was one of several to have occurred recently in the Ingram Road area of Jackson County.
The Kentucky Division of Forestry responded to the fire and worked several hours to contain it. The majority of forest fires in Kentucky are started by arsonists. Since Jan. 1, 2005, the division has suppressed 470 forest fires, of which 291 have been designated as arson.
“If more people in the community would step forward and provide information, we could reduce the number of these arson fires,” said Trish Boles, district ranger technician from the division’s Pineville office.
