I am looking for some advise. I would ultimately like to end up in Colorado with a full time FF/EMT job on a department, but now I live in NH. Right now I am an EMT-B taking an I class with medic school as a possiblity on the horizon. I am also a month away from completeing Firefighter I at the New Hampshire Fire Academy and Fire II should be completed by November. How do you take a eligibility test in a state that is not a days drive away?
Thanks

Be prepared to make several trips

Some agencies offer testing for out of state candidates where they conduct all phases over a two or three day period.

Others, you will have to make several trips as you progress thru the process.

One place to start would be the DRCOG Firefighter testing.

Check out Aurora Fire Dept. 14 sta. approx 300 FF, good calls, good amt. of fires. Last few years only a few hundred people have applied and tested. Good odds of getting hired.

Definately take the NR emt test. Colorado now requires it.

I would say that your best bet would be with Denver. They just opened there fall testing. As for Aurora they have not hired anyone for the last two years. I have heard through the grrapevine that they should be testing this fall. Aurora had a hard time with there budget and had to hold off on staffing. Hope this helps.

Your best bet would be to move to the area you really
want to work and start networking.

Again, dont narrow your options to just 1-2 FDs. Find
where you really want to work and focus.

And again- still the two best places to find jobs-

If you plan on just chasing leads in here, youre wasting
everyone's time. You need to subscibe to a weekly service
that is cutting edge. Because if you dont, your competetion
is.

The job sites Bou listed are invaluable.... its difficult at best to keep up with job openings on your own.

Many large Colorado department are having budget woes... Denver FF's gave up raises to stop layoffs and/or station closings. That doesn't mean they won't be hiring. Aurora was in the same, if not worse boat.

Do your homework, have you visited the area, are you sure thats where you want to work?

You can fill out an interest card with many depts and they will notify you when they are testing. Most are on two year cycles and many tested this year.
