I have just recently started searching in the chicago area. Some of the requirements to apply at some places are having your P or having your B and your firefighter 2. Is this normal? How could i go about getting my ff2 if I already have my B?

kinda depends on whereabouts you reside. If you're in a POC district you could get hired on as a FF/EMT with that district, or volunteer district. If they hire you they will send you to an academy or train you themselves, where you'd have to take the state exam on your own. The other way to get FFII is to get sponsored by a department. They don't pay for it, you have to do that yourself, but you train under their "title" so to speak. You wouldn't get a job there after, unless you're high up on their list or something, but FFII is attainable if you get in with a FD's training officer, and convince him you're worth sponsoring. Know any FFs in town?
I'd love to help you, but I have no pull, my start date is July 5th. You could however go to PM school and go contract for a while if the testing isn't going so well. It really sucks, not as bad as privates, but it's a step up.
