I had my final interview with the board of chiefs this week. Actually it turned out to be THE Chief, a deputy, and a captain. The captain barely said 3 words..asked questions about my previous training..etc.
The chief and the deputy asked most of the questions. The chief was very personable and when the recorded interview was over, he wanted to chat about the fire service and labor/management stuff (I accidently let it slip that I am pres. of my local). He told me the interview was officially over and everything from here on out was totally off the record and just 2 FFs talking.
I should add prior to the interview being 'officially over' he stated, "Your interview went just fine and not to worry...your employment here will be under the condition you pass the physical exam and drug screen"
Now the part that baffles me, and corncerns me. I don't know if they were just playing good cop/bad cop or what...but the deputy tore into me about EVERYTHING..anything I said, my previous work experience, even my being a union official (wish I hadn't mentioned that). He did not have one positive thing to say about or to me. The total opposite of the chief. Apparently this deputy did this to other applicants. FFs on the job already told me he has an attitude like that with everybody.
My buddy on the job there says he hates everybody, and not to stress over it. I should say I carried my self very well, and I did not let him get the best of me during the interview. I made it very clear to all of them that even though I do not hold rank here, I have a certain postion of authority, even on the fire ground, and that the job I was applying for was my dream job...and my postion and responsibilities would be quite different there.
Finally, the chief told me as he walked me out the door...that those who will be offered a job will be notified by mail and phone. I really thought his quote above was an offer of employment under those conditions.
The chief seemed very pleased with my experience, how I handled the interview, and even wanted to BS after the interview.
How would you guys feel walking out of this interview? Do you think I'm going to be offered a job?
