Fire Pole

This a dumb question but is there a proper technique to slide down the Fire Pole

First that isn't a dumb question as if one doesn't know what they are doing they can get hurt....that being said.

Grasp the pole with both hands and kick out one leg placing the front side crook where your foot meets your leg against the pole and swing the other one around to behind the pole and your leg wraped around the pole. Then squeezing with your legs begin your decent...allowing your legs to regulate your speed. Don't use your hands as a brake...they are mearly used to hold your upper body to the pole...with enough practice one can slide without hands and even holding a cup of coffee!

Have a senior man in your house show you how to do it properly. After that there should be no problem sliding the pole.

Guys on my dept use many different techniques. Some use hands; some use the bend in their arm to hang on. Some use their hands to "walk" down the pole without sliding their hands. (avoids friction burns) I like to wrap my right leg around the pole and put the sole of my left foot on the pole directly opposite my right knee. That controls the rate of descent. In the morning, the above method is used with one hand on the pole and one controlling coffee spillage! :D

SLiding down a pole can be very dangerous. The Dover VFD just lost a very respected member. He was showing some firefighters the proper way to slide a pole and fell.

I'm sure though this was one of those freak accidents. I've heard of the sprianed ankles and so forth.

Yea i know it was a dumb stupid a** question but i hade to ask, people told me different things, and i don't want to f*cking hurt myself on a fire pole, so i appreciate the advise.

I try to use my hands only to get on to the pole then I wrap my arm. Ihave heard that the repeated touching of the pole with your hands can leave oils that can cause the brass to loose it's luster
