At 5am on Monday the 12th of September, 21 firefighters from Lexington arrived in Mississippi to man fire stations there so that their paid firefighters could have some time off to start rebuilding their lives.
On their first day they made three runs, two trash fires and an alligator rescue! They will be deployed in two week cycles for a month or two at least.
Meanwhile, two Oklahoma City firefighters were dispatched to Lexington and assigned to Centinary United Methodist Church where about 150 evacuees are housed. The Oklahoma City firefighters are joined daily by a 3 man crew from Lexington and together they aid the Red Cross with the care of the victims and with FEMA and Red Cross paperwork. Bet the guys from OK never thought they would end up working in a shelter in Kentucky when they left fo the gulf!
