In December I will be finished with fire school, taking my state test the beginning of January. That means I'll have to be doing someting productive for however long it takes to get hired, which around Florida could be anywhere from three months to a year, depending on department.

I was wondering what would be a good temporary job that would be fun but also beneficial towards the firefighting career. I have an english degree and have worked in such jobs from mowing lawns, working in warehouses, and camp counselor. I don't mind gritting my teeth for a few months while I wait to get hired but I want to have a job that will aid in my experience as a firefighter. Also, I can't stand being bored; I feel like I am stagnating.

I also plan to volunteer after I get certificate and do ride alongs at the departments I want to work for in December.

For the last two years of school I worked part time as an ambulance driver at an private company. Great job for a student but I didn't like the lackadsical attitude all around the place, though I did learn more about prodecures and got to drive that huge MAV unit a few times.

I'd prefer to do something else, though I still consider it an option. Another option is paramedic school, but I have been in active school the last 17 years of my life and I would really like to start working, start building up savings, etc. I'll get my medic eventually but right now I am interested in more combat and I don't want to get stuck on a box somewhere.

Find a volunteer department and see about attending training meetings with them. You'll be getting training that counts towards whatever requirements that Florida has and might end up a member.
As to paying jobs while waiting hiring, anytghing that you have done and left on good terms will do,won't it?
I am applying to departments around my original hometown of Memphis Tn and will be looking at some jobs I that I had in the past, mainly towboat deckhand.I didn't leave on good terms at all of them but enough time has passed and personnel changes may get me back with them.
Any rate, good luck with it.I've been a volunteer for 2 years now and wouldn't have missed it for the world.

If you have the oppurtunity to get your Paramedic, get it! That will give you the best chance of getting hired. Volunteer while in school if you want, but education and medical training are the things most departments are looking for in a new recruit.

It'll be much easier to get your medic now than to have to work school around your shift schedule once you get on.

Try delivering pizza(other kinds of food too) in the area where you want to work.

1. you will be able to learn the neighborhoods, and the streets, therefore getting a good handle on districts before you are even hired. You can also look out for things like hydrants, abandoned houses, utilities etc.

2. You can get an idea of how folks in the area drive. I know it may sound silly, but there are different "driver personalities" even in different parts of town.

3. Typically a very easy job to get, sometimes it is good money, and you usually dont have a "boss" breathing down your neck all the time.

4. Depending upon who you work for, you may be able to respond to calls while working. I just had to call the mgr, & tell him where I was, and make sure I turned in all the money before they closed.

Just an idea off the top of my head.
