Voulenteering as an inspector's assistant?

I'm going to be finishing my fire inspector 1 class in the next few weeks. Our final assignment was to accompany a fire inspector on a pre-existing construction building. I did the inspection and it turned out to be pretty interesting, and I learned a lot (I didn't think I would enjoy doing fire inspections). The city I live in has a small career department (20 people) with 3 inspectors (I went with this department on my inspection), I was thinking about offering to help out with inspections at this department. I figure I would kind of be an assistant to the inspector jot down notes, be an extra set of eyes, and while doing all of this I would get some inspection experience, and a resume builder. Does anyone see any problems with this plan, would your department go for it, what do you think?

it sounds like a good idea but if the department is fully paid i dont know if it would happen. i am on a similar sized department of 16 plus chief and they just made me take inspector 1 and 2 so i could be the 2nd insp on the department 1 for each of the 2 shifts and i know for a fact that the members would have a massive heart attack if we allowed someone to vol to help us since we make a little more on out checks to do this job.

I wouldn't want to be taking over their job or anything I would jsut be an extra set of hands around to help out and make their job easier, I see what you mean though.

I think it would be a good learning experience and will probaly look good on a resume.
