Anybody have a "Safety City" for educating kids?

I would appreciate a chance to talk to you about your facility.

What I mean by "Safety City" is a scaled down set of streets, with traffic signs / lights, striping, store fronts, etc., used to teach elementery schoolers pedestrian and bike safety.

My company sponsors and puts on "Safety Town" every spring for the local schools. Since we have facilities in 3 parishes (West Baton Rouge, Iberville, and Assumption), Safety Town is done 3 different weeks, one in each parish. My department's office professional (the Emergency Services department at the plant, not my volunteer department) is one of the main planners of this event...in fact, I just got an e-mail from her yesterday giving me the dates for this years' Safety Town.

It takes a day or two to set up....in Assumption Parish we set it up in the gym at Napoleonville Primary School and students are bussed in from the various schools in the parish each day. There are little plywood buildings that knock down for storage, and they lay out the streets on the gym floor with tape. They have little stop signs, working traffic lights, etc., and the kids ride around not on bicycles but on Big Wheels (complete with seat belts, which we installed), and helmets.

Usually the fire departments' only involvement is to come in and give a brief fire safety presentation. We have 5 fire departments in the parish, so we each take a day.

I can put you in touch with someone down here who's more involved with it, if you'd like. PM or e-mail me.
