Wildfire threatens cabins near Pigeon Forge
PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (AP) - Two wildfires near the Dollywood
theme park worked their way up a mountain and threatened several
rental cabins.
The fire last night burned an estimated 30 acres and forced the
evacuation of 75 to 100 people from nearby homes on Shields
Mountain, on the eastern side of Pigeon Forge.
A fire last Thursday near the Great Smoky Mountains National
Park destroyed six mountaintop cabins on Cove Mountain, southwest
of downtown Pigeon Forge.
Meanwhile in Macon County, Tennessee Highway 141 between
Westmoreland and Hartsville was closed yesterday afternoon because
of a brush fire. Strong winds blew smoke toward the road, and
helped the fire jump trenches dug by firefighters trying to contain
it.
