I have been out of the fire service for 6 years due to family and medical reasons ... I am cleared to go back to fighting fire but all my certifications are expired .. can the tests be challenged or do I need to go back through the classes again ????

If your talking about Wildland S courses. The certs don't expire. Your Red Card does. Every year you have to take a refresher course and pack test to keep up your Red Card and other wildland courses that are on the card. So I would think all you have to do is go through a refresher course and pack test.

Wildfire quals have a 5 year currency, you must perform the job or another that will maintain currency at least once every 5 years. Aviation quals have a 3 year currency. So yes, technically you will have to retake the classes and complete a task book for the FF1 (squad boss). The FF2 task book should be completed in class. However considering the basic nature of FF2 a refresher will likely be accepted, but FF1 should require another task book since you can lead others who may have little to no experience.
