Who ever parked the rig in the station [or apron] WITHOUT SETTING THE BRAKES...should [at minimum] be given a couple of weeks off...without pay, to think about what this will cost the citizens of Ocala to repair.

Then, after thinking about this costly incident...be sent to basic driving school for Class-B CDL/with AIR BRAKEs endorcement.

I like how they leave the possibility open that it was "mechanical failure," and in some way E-One will be to blame.

Not my thread LOL. Don't beat yourself up about it, you certainly aren't the first to post a duplicate thread and you won't be the last. ;) :D :D :p

With any luck the guilty party did the City of Ocala a favor and the insurance company will total that thing. The favorable outcome will be that the truck is recycled into beer and soda cans, and the City of Ocala purchases something other than locally manufactured garbage to replace it.

Oh, and Bob, I am sure you never make any mistakes. Hopefully the guilty party has a clean record, and the City is leniant.

Oh, and Bob, I am sure you never make any mistakes. What ! When people make mistakes they need to be held accountable...and YES, I have made plenty over the years...and paid for them. But, what does MY mistakes have to do with this incident, which was obviously preventable by mearly "setting the brakes."?

Are they just susposed to write this mistake off as part of the job?

Obviously you are not "thrilled" with E-One, but that dosen't have anything to do with the costly mistake either, that the NOT the City of Ocala must deal with...but the TAXPAYERS who bought the rig. Fire equipment is NOT the property of the Fire Department nor the employees, unless of course it is a private company. Maybe if this was an FWD, you would be a little more concerned.

I don't know Bob, you make some good points but I don't think the Buff is going to let you get away with dissing the nameplate. Somebody may have medicated him before he saw your reply but Im pretty sure you're gonna get blasted!:) :D

Ahhhhhh only if it was MY F.W.D. But then again, if it was my F.W.D., you could have locked all 3 differentials, put it in reverse, and climbed right out of that muck. (Air intake is way up high.) Truck builders in 1958 had such bad ideas....... That reminds me, anyone want to come to the F.W.D.'s 50th birthday party in March???

Can't really diss a name that dissappeared for 20 years and made a sudden comeback, Tony......They didnt even have that new thing at Harrisburg for me to check out, them bastids! Kind of like dissing Metz, aint enough of them around to diss!

A little further look into this thing is needed, and I hope the powers that be in Ocala are awake enough to do it. I'm don't know what year the truck is, but I'm going to assume that it's new enough to have ASAs (Automatic Slack Adjusters), the part that adjusts for brake wear. ASAs are great, but they have been known to fail. Failures can occur "just because" they're mechanical parts, and any mechanical part can fail.

Another way ASAs can fail is because someone attempted to make a manual adjustment and didn't know or didn't use the proper procedure. With some ASAs, if the correct adjustment procedure isn't followed, not only will they no longer adjust for wear, they can actually back off (loosen up).

One common reason (certainly not the only reason) for doing a manual adustment is when the brake shoes or pads are replaced. I saw a case like that some years ago. A couple of months after a rear brake reline, a driver complained that when he parked the truck and set the parking brake, it "just didn't feel right." I took a look at it and saw over nearly 3" of push rod travel on both sides. If only one side was out, I could chalk it up to a natural failure, but both sides? Unh, unh.

Something else that needs to be checked into, did drivers complain that the truck was taking longer to stop? Unless it's equipped with bigger brakes than it needs, that would also be expected.

Like with so many facets of our jobs, we get lulled into complacency; we get so reliant on certain things that we accept them for granted.

What it all boils down to is, before we go hang the driver, we need to know if he just didn't pull up the knob, or was there a failure? Where's the union on this, anyway? Presumably this is an IAFF represented career department.

Stay safe out there, everyone goes home!

I [really] was not attempting to "diss" Buff's FWD, as I am aware of the FWD/Seagrave "connection," and to me...Seagrave still builds the best. They may not be the leader in production today, but their quality and reputation is unbeatable...ask FDNY. Who is the oldest mfg. of fire apparatus...still in business today? Many have come and gone, and there will be more gone as their focus on the "bottom-line" instead of qualilty, is evident. If Seagrave would only get back to building on a "commerical" chassis [again] to help keep the cost and maintenance down, I think they will be around as long as fire equipment is in demand.

Remember the Seagrave slogan sometime in the late 1980's; "the news of my death was surely over exaggerated," or something close to that?

Bob says: "Maybe if this was an FWD, you would be a little more concerned."

Buff, I am obviously an "oletimer" as I [think] you are also, and I totally agree that "new is NOT always better...contrary to popular opinion today." The more "bells [not the traditional chrome railroad bell on the rig] and whistles they put on this stuff today...the more problems. The fire rig is ONLY a "device" to get firefighting equipment to the scene of a fire, not for sitting around or presenting at a parade, for someone to say..."look what we have." :)

I guess the moral of the story is, " if you have a slope in the station's floor, don't have going in the direction of the lake across the street!"

I think the driver got off easy on this one.

I bet that there will be a barrier placed across the street form the station now.

There should be if they don't, plus...a BIG SIGN errected at the approach to the station to warn pedestrations and passing vehicles: ;)

WATCH OUT FOR UNATTENDED VEHICLES...THAT MAY COME FROM INSIDE THE STATION...WITHOUT WARNING!

Last time I looked water was like what 8.34 lbs per gallon times 1000 doesn't exactly equal 10,000 lbs. Good try though.
