Since 2002, Local 122 has raised over a half-million dollars for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. We have become the first union to overthrow the street corner ordinance and have broken the top 10 in the nation in terms of money raised.
Along the way, we have had the help of a young lady named Iris Roberts. Iris lives in Lake City. Her mom has tirelessly driven her across the state to many firefighter functions. She has come to all of our functions and has supported us in all of our endeavors.
At birth, Iris was diagnosed with Myotonia Congenita Muscular Dystrophy. In English, that means her spine will curve around her internal organs until it crushes her. In November, Iris underwent extensive surgery that broke her spine in hundreds of places and inserted metal rods to slow the curve. Iris spent 10 days in Wolfson’s battling infections and fever and another 42 days in Brook’s rehab.
Iris is now at home and that is where the help is needed. Until now, she had been able to get around the house. Now the house has to undergo an extensive renovation project so it is handicap accessible. Doorways need to be widened, she needs a bigger room, etc.
A statewide bulletin has gone out looking for help. At the time, we need the following:
-Plumber
-Electrician
-Concrete expert
-Cash
The project is expected to run $80,000-$100,000. We have $8,000. The project is being run by The Florida Professional Firefighters, with our own MDA Coordinator, Chris Vance assisting. Work days at Iris’ house in Lake City are being planned. Volunteers will be needed.
We have requested help from TV shows, but we are one of 10,000 weekly requests they get so this is not an option.
We get a lot of our political strength from our ability to get out in the public for charitable efforts. Iris has been a major reason why we have been able to do what we do. I ask that you please take a moment to see if you can help with this situation. Contact Chris Vance at 509-2626 if you can help.
You can check out Iris’s website at http://www.irisproject.org.
Thank you.
