Kansas City, KS is home to the Kansas Speedway which hosts races for NASCAR, Craftsman Truck, and the IRL. KCK also has the Kansas City T-Bones, an independent professional baseball team. There is also the Kansas City Wizards professional soccer team. Soon to open will be the Schlitterbahn Vacation Village. The Schlitterbahn Vacation Village is a $750 million year-round, trend-setting, retail entertainment destination comprised of multiple shopping, dining, lodging and entertainment venues connected by a Transportainment River System. In the Vacation Village, manmade rivers carry guests between lodging units and world-class Water Resort along with a covered Riverwalk including shops and restaurants.

The Kansas City KS fire dept. operates out of 18 fire houses with 16 ALS pumper companies, 3 ALS quint companies, and 3 BLS truck companies. Additionally the KCKFD operates its own EMS transport division started in 2004. The EMS division operates 9 ALS ambulances with cross trained FF/EMT's and FF/Paramedics. Other specialty units include USAR, HazMat, Heavy Rescue, and Water Rescue. In 2007 the dept. responded to just under 25000 calls for service. There are approximately 450 uniformed employees of which nearly 1/3 are paramedics. The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department proudly protects approx 150000 residential citizens in an area of approximately 127 square miles. Firefighters negotiate union contracts as a part of IAFF Local 64.
The starting pay for both positions may seem a bit low (don't forget..midwest and cost of living), but a person who has been here for 5 years is making $57K. The pay will go up with the new contract that will be signed this year.

For good pay, benefits, and an aggressive firefighting dept., this could be the place for you.

They are taking applications right now, the anticipated hire date is September 29th 2008, and the word on the street is 38, take as many medics as they can get and fill the rest in with EMTs.

It is a possibility, there are a lot of EMTs that will apply to KCK, if you are a medic though your competition is much smaller.

How does Kansas City, KS Fire Dept. take the background section into consideration? If I have had a few screw ups in the past will I get eliminated right from the start? By that I mean a DUI in 2000 and have used some illegal drugs over 5 years ago.

OK, salary range, AS OF NOW, EMTs start at around 30,000 and top out in 5 years at 55,000, AS OF Now, Medics start at 34,711 and top out in 3 years at 55,000. Now, add to these salaries AT LEAST 8% and you will have the likely salary of when the hire date is, this is contract stuff. Work schedule is 24/48s, 24 on 48 off with a ton of extra days off including vacation, kelley days, and holidays. Retirement is good KP&F its Kansas Police and Fire retirement system. If you are planning on applying you have only 3 days left.

Does anyone know how the physical test is scored, is it just pass/fail or does the time count toward your final score or ranking? Also is the 4:10 plenty of time for the physical or are most people usually pushing it to pass? Thanks for the info.

Was today the only day for the physical agility? I heard around 150 people made it to the physical. Just curious as to how people are going to make it to the next portion of the process?

KCfire,
Have you heard anything from KCK, I have not heard anything yet and was just wondering what the latest was? Any info is great.

06-08-2008, 03:14 PM
no, from what ive heard were not going to hear anything back until early july...however, i also heard the background check is what eliminates most of the candidates for kck

ehs7554

You are correct. They do an extensive background check and I believe they even look into your credit history, but I am not sure. Many people will probably get eliminated during their background checks. With 150 or so people gunning for possibly 30 or so jobs, I would guess even the smallest issue with your background could knock a person out. Hopefully you can beat the approx 1 in 5 odds...whch isn't too bad considering your odds on many other dept's. There is also the possibility that some who do get conditional offers will turn them down. Who knows? Good Luck!

kck is voting on their contract tonight and tomorrow, just in case anyone is still interested.

Soma99
07-09-2008, 09:25 PM
So what does that mean for us who took the test?

ehs7554
07-09-2008, 10:13 PM
It could mean that city has been too busy with contract negotiations and therefore has had to put hiring on the back burner until contract issues are resolved and voted on. I have heard that the FD is still on for a class in Sept., but I have not heard if any has been called or when they will move on with the process.

they are voting on their contract so that will be all settled and all the pay and budget will be figured out, they are still on for a class in september and supposed to be another class just after the first of the year so i hear

KCfire10
07-10-2008, 08:38 PM
From what I have heard, they're still planning on hiring this september around 28 to 34 guys. I checked with all my references and they have all have been interviewed so I hope to be moving on, but who knows when and if I will. This process has to be continuing shortly if the hiring date is this september, good luck to anyone else still in the process.

I heard about a potential hiring freeze for this upcoming class. Is there any truth to these rumors?

ehs7554
07-19-2008, 03:00 AM
According to the UG web site and the paper, the hiring freeze does not apply to cops, firefighters, and bus drivers

08-03-2008, 11:05 PM
did anybody else hear back for moving on in the process?
