Quite a few here in Northwest New Jersey. 1987 Macks through mid 90's Peterbilt and Kenworths.
Bergen County NJ also
They had trouble with the weld eating microbes unless you went inside and washed the barrel with car wash soap a few times a year. L'l guy like me used to go in the hatch
Bodys are very good construction. 80's trucks used Darley pumps
90's and up use Waterous pumps

I had experience with a BLM loaner S & S wildland last summer. It had obviously been beat, but it seemed to be put together pretty well.

We have three in my volly county - 1989 Peterbilt, 1991 International, and 1995 Spartan. With the exception of one, which had some issues with leaks around the gasket for the officer's side dump, we've had remarkably good luck with them.
I'd buy another one when the time came...

I am familiar with several units as well. They are well-built, durable "working man's" trucks. The companies that own them are all happy with them, and believe that they received a lot of "bang for their bucks."

Our tank cracked soon after taking delivery. They refuse to take responsibility for the flawed construction. There are bolts missing from the chassis. It thump and banks when you turn. The freightliner chassis HVAC controls break yearly. And just last month, the dome light fell out.
So no, I wouldn't recommend S&S to my worst enemy.

So, besides the tank crack, is it a Freightliner problem or a S&S problem? Many of your problems seem like Freightliner issues.

so then we should stay away from them.

what kind of chassis do you guys want jeremy.
Commercial fire apparatus is only as good as the chassis that carries it.
Waterous pumps are the same no matter who's truck its on.
The tank mounting is very good and I have driven ours many hours without a squak.
Mine is on a Mach RD fire chassis. 21 years old and she needs a new chassis.
Body and pump are fine
Freightliner .....hmmmmmmmm maybe
depends on how hard you are going to work it

We have one S&S tanker; it’s on a Volvo chassis built in 2002. It carries 3300 gallons with a 750 pump, 1-3/4 and 2-1/2 preconnects, 2 side and 1 rear dump.
After 6 years of use the only problem we’ve had just developed in the last few weeks is an air valve on a side dump not working properly? Other then that it’s been a good truck for us.
S&S were did a nice job on this truck and I have no problem recommending them to others.
