Hey dude, first of all I'm from Washington County MD, and I think just about everybody here is doing the same basic thing; Stations that have a Rescue Squad are as a minimum requireing the Univ. of MD rescue tech. class as a minimum, or prerequisite to do squad work. Now this does not include any other training requirements (FF I/II, EMT, etc.). Those of us that are rescue "heads" so to speak usually push the issue until our respective departments choose to build upon that training. The Rescue Tech. class that the state teaches just barely meets the requirements. But it does none the less. The rest of us that do squad work and heavy rescue work frequently recognize that this is just enough training to get somebody in trouble. My volunteer dept. conducts training every monday. And we do in fact train agressively with our members. Unfortunately, it is tough to force "volunteers" to come to training, and you are left with the wrong people doing the wrong things on incidents. My career dept. has a drill on each shift, however due to cuts in staffing, and the inability to force people to go take training while off the clock, you are again left with people who just barely meet the bare minimums. We do try to meet the NFPA standards as best we can.
