Default Residency Requirements

How does everyone feel about residency requirements? To clarify, I'm talkimg about Full-Time or Part-Time firefighters, not POC or Volunteer. That is a whole other issure.

The local "Big City" FD says you must live in the city, but gives waivers out after 10 years. There are others that utilize a radius. Some say you must live in the same or adjacent counties, yet others just have a random list of locales.

Do you agree with them? What do you think the requirement should be?

For the most part, I don't like residency requirements but it depends on how the department is run.

There is a smaller city to the north of us who's second alarm is to recall the previous shift. However, they do not have a residency requirement so it takes quite awhile to get everybody in since most of them don't live in the city. A residency requirement would make sense for them (but then again, so would calling the neighboring departments for a 2nd, even if they are "just vollies" )

Oh boy a topic that is to my liking!!!!!!

Residency requirements are useless. It is nice to see that many municipalities in NW Ohio are getting rid of them. I can only hope that one more falls very very soon....

Ours requirement is you must live in a county bordering our county. That is how its handled here. I think that a residency for FT and PT is stupid.....I know of 2 departments near me that you must live in that area or your not hired.

the only .....and I feel only drawback could be that obviously if you dont live where you work you cannot vote on items that may effect your job like tax items etc.

You know my feeling on this issue...our department cant use the recall excuse during an emergency because they rely on the neighboring departments to bail them out for 6 hours like a few weeks back.

In reality though, Josh your right about the voting issues that may affect our jobs that we would not have a say in, that is a draw back. In my opinion this day and age I really dont agree with them, I dont agree with being told where I have to live based on my employment. Obviously my department beat this issue to death and we finally got the 10 year rule. I have a waiver, but I'm in no hurry to leave living in the city. At one point I did think for a minute that if I'm going to be a volunteer FF on my days off, I may as well move to Rossford and join their department and make the big bucks while I'm at it too

Default Can I Play Too?

I Left a couple thoughts on this in another thread. I'm not from Ohio, but ya said "everyone" right?

The residency issue rears its ugly head in a few NH cities. My question is this: Who's to stop me from running a landscaping business that keeps me tied up for the 6 days I have off in an 8 day cycle? In working that job, I'd be completely unavailable for callback at times other than overnight or held over on a shift. So whether I live IN town & have another job that doesn't allow me callback, OR I live an hour away and STILL make it to my shift 45 minutes early, what's the freakin difference?
