    Default A new all-time low.......

.........yesterday while on duty we were toned out on an EMS call. The call came out as an 11 Y/O female having ABD pain & 4 months pregnant. I most certainly thought the dispatcher had the wrong information. We arrived onscene and proceeded into the residence. Upon entering I saw a female lying on the couch. I approached her and asked what her medical complaint was and she stated that her stomach hurt. I then asked her her age. She looked young. She then said she was 11 years old. I asked again, "You're 11 years old?" She said yes.

I was completely blown away. I have never encountered a patient that young who was pregnant in my 8 years in the Fire/EMS field (the previous was 13 years old). Now, without passing judgement on this young girl, I have really been thinking about this call and have been wondering how an 11 year old becomes pregnant (yes, I know how), but was she having unprotected sex with her "boyfriend", was she raped? I really didn't think it would be professional to ask her how she became impregnated at her young age.

    Any opinions, comments?

    Ugh.

I don't feel well after reading that.

Scary to think that is what this world is coming too.

Wow that does blow your mind away. The way kids are today it makes you wonder. When my wife was in 7th grade a girl in her class became pregnant. Kids having kids.

Definitely hard not to pass judgement in that situation and you were definitely right to not ask about how she became pregnant. I can also see why this call has kinda stuck with you, it shocked me to read it.

Your post reminded me of a call I responded to when I was still a cop. I was sent for a 16 y/o female who been battered by her boyfriend. She was pregnant with his kid and he hit her a few times on the back and shoulder area, no severe injuries. But my point is, the whole time handling the call nothing screamed at me that this was out of the ordinary, a pregnant 16 y/o.

It strikes me now after hearing your story to think that a pregnant 16 y/o is so common it didn't shock me then...It's a sad state that it takes hearing about a pregnant 11 y/o to cause one to be shocked.

I would think is is something reportable as suspected child abuse? Don't we have that duty to report? An 11yr old child being pregnant was subjected to abuse regardless of who or how.

That is a good point....family services needs to be involved for the wellfare of the 11 y/o as well as the baby.

    Ding ding ding!!

Many states technically don't even allow minors to have sex until they reach the age of consent (varies state to state).

While it is an antiquated law, it damn sure applies here. You can bet your butt I would have been on the cell with a Supervisor, PD, and DCF!

And the really hard thing is that this job requires that we put our personal feelings about things like this in a locked room in our heads and not ask the nearest male, whether or not he is in his teens"What the rusty F word were you thinking?" while showing him how a Pierce Enforcer bumper feels when he's slammed against it.
I never understood how my chain of command could do that since most of them were fathers, uncles, and aunts and grandparents themselves.

It was being looked into by the ER staff shortly after we arrived at the hospital. Also, this young girl was NOT with her parent's.....she was being looked after by foster parent's.

Maybe it was already being investigated and that is why she was in foster care because of an ongoing investigation with the Department of Children's Services and the local P.D. ?

    Hey Brett,

My partner and I did everything correctly with this patient. I have never ran a call that has made me more SAD than yesterday. I was very happy that this young girl was in foster care. I'm sure it was probably not very good where she was with her mother, or whoever had guardianship over her when she became pregnant.

Just when you think you have seen everything on the job.......

I hope the f**king slob endures more pain in prison than the girl herself... Those with crimes against children, in any way, should be tortured - not killed - torured. They should feel the same pain that the kids are feeling or will be feeling in the years to come because they're scared for life. If we don't torture the d-bags, why don't we just go ahead and kill them. Hell, it costs less to kill someone than it dies to incarerate them for life...

To be honest, that doesn't surprise me. Makes me sick to my stomach that someone could do that and very very ******ed off. I would love to spend 10 minutes in a room with him alone.

Stuff like that happens now and again. Seems a lot lately in the Midwest. Just read on CNN where a 73 yr old man reported his 18 yr old daughter as missing years ago. They just found the cave she lived in the basement. She was 42 yrs old!!! To make it worse, he raped her since she was 18 and got her pregnant 7 times!

When I was a reserve deputy sheriff I assisted in several child abuse/porn/rape/incest cases. Let me tell you.....it takes huge huge restraint no to take "the long way" to the jail to work them over a while. And the scary thing is that is just what you find out about! You truely never know who a person is. Just two weeks ago a boy scout leader was arrested in my county for having child porn on his computer. Unfortunately, no, it doesn't surprise me when you deal with it all the time. My heart goes out to that little girl, and all the little girls and boys that are a victim of this.

Like someone said before, at least you were there to help and get the ball rolling for some help for her. I commend you for that. All we can do is help one person at a time.

So it is impossible for her to have an 12 or 13 year old boyfriend and that they both physically matured fast?

It's calls like the one in this thread that make me glad I am no longer in a department that runs EMS.

Blame it on the chicken and everything else packed with hormones that the kids are eating.
