    Default SAFER Grants

Hey Guys, I am looking into the SAFER grant for my vollie department for the volunteer and recruitment section. What does this section cover ? I have been told it can cover remodel of your station (ie-Training Room, Kitchen, Weight Room, Day and Bunkrooms) Any info would be great, ya'll take care and be safe.

I would recommend reading the program guidence from last year and then start making a plan.

I'm also a first time SAFER grant writer working on a recruitment/retention for my vollie department, and I didn't read anything about construction in last year's program guidance. In addition to reading the guidance you may also want to read the latest Retention/Recruitment guide from the NVFC.

Here's the link. I found this very helpful.

I wouldn't count on it covering anything for a lounge area in your department. We were awarded in 2007 and the things that got cut in our request were a sign (just a plain sign...not digital) and couches, tables and pool table.

Probably cut the plain sign since it takes more manual labor to get it changed. Unless it was just a sign for the department's name. Digital signs have been and continue to be awarded, easy to change the message and keep people's attention.

Yeah. But one refusal by no means makes it a bad, or unfunded idea.

We were awarded for an LED sign, that can even be accessed (With password of course) by the internet. I can have 911 access it and change
it to read "WRECK AHEAD SLOW DOWN" or "FLOODING" "TORNADO" etc.

I made sure in my narrative to include some of the things I would put on it, such as (Stolen shamelessly from these forums) NOW HIRING - NO PAY - LOUSY HOURS - KEWL HAT etc. I also added community even information - anything I can do to attract attention to the fire department. People drive by fire stations every day and never give them a second thought, so I want to make them think.

On my lounge equipment, i not only included that it would help to attract more firefighters, not only from the community but with the bunk beds from people coming to our county seat to take the fire science program and needed a place to live. I then added that if I had more people hanging out at the fire station, I would have equipment out the door quicker in the event of fire.

I would not say don't count on it, so much depends on how you ask for it. It is by no means cut and dry - peer reviewer can pass different things on different days. The guidelines for SAFER are as broad as a barn. Your statement is sort of like saying "I got turned down for a new engine, so If I were you I would not expect to get one of that grant program".

This is my departments first year applying for safer grant and because I do the AFG guess what, its my job too. We are looking at Uniforms Class A & B, length of service and medal awards program, and also some recruiting ideas. If anybody has any ideas or narratives they could share. I would appreciate it.

    Default Hiring?

I would appreciate any assistance on how to obtain the hiring template. The # that keeps showing up for per hired firefighter is $105,425.

That's the max amount per FF per the Program Guidelines. They adjust the max amount yearly for inflation.
