I'm planning on applying to the Milwaukee fire department, and I'm wondering how long the application process takes? after applying, how long until the written exam? after the written exam, how long until the CPAT? so on and so forth. Thanks.

I have a dilemma
Thanks for the reply.
I'm assuming the class is the for the academy (let me know if I'm wrong). I have a dilemma. Right now I'm only working part-time teaching at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (video production), and I have 3 kids who won't stop growing. I applied to teach at mps and if they hire me to work in the fall I'll miss my chance at being a firefighter. I'd much rather be a firefighter, but I have to take the first full-time job that's offered to me. I can't wait until January (at least this is what my wife tells me) to be bringing in a full-time income, but I don't want to miss the opportunity of becoming a firefighter (which isn't guaranteed). I plan on taking the written exam and doing whatever else I have to do to become a firefighter regardless of whether I'm teaching at mps. I guess my questions are: will there be other classes offered? the firefighter website says that they'll be taking apps in late spring or early summer. Is this the last time in the next 5 years or so that they'll be taking apps?
I'm 33 (almost 34) and I can't waste any more time. my dream is to be a part of the H.U.R.T. I've been working out consistently for the past 2 months to prepare for the cpat, and I've always wanted to be a firefighter (and a filmmaker) since I was a kid. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

These processes are extremely, I mean extremely long. Its an emotional roller coaster too. I actually just filled out another application to a department that I'm currently going through the background check for. The process overlaps. So its been longer than one year and the academy dosen't start for a few months.
You want this more than anything and know you'll be perfect for the job. Then you realize 3000 guys feel the same way. My advice to you is apply in Milwaukee and the 3 closest cities to milwaukee. Increase your chances to get on a fire department by trying for multiple departments, then jump on the first one that offers you something. Your running out of time! I'm in a similiar race with the clock. I'm 32 and that only adds to the pressure of these processes.

The latest word that is out there from reliable sources is that apps should happen mid-summer. They still want to hire, it's just a matter of how many. The budget process has to work it's way a bit more, but we're carrying a significant amount of vacancies right now. Expect to see alot of press time from our local this summer, as well.
Jsin, if you're teaching, that's great. It doesn't mean you have to turn down the chance to get on the job, though. If they do indeed hire a class in January, you'll only have a few months in MPS. There is no reason at all why you couldn't take the fire job anytime it is offered to you. Don't forget, you could still substitute teach on your off days; I know several guys who have done that in the past.

jasper45, will you be at any of the houses hosting an open house this saturday. i'll be stopping by engine 12 because the HURT special ops team is headquartered there and i hope to join it one day. but, if you are going to be at any of the other ones i wouldn't mind stopping by and picking your brain (if that's alright with you).
