New guy wants to put out FIRES!

Hi I'm from Washington area. Just trying to find out what it takes to become a firefighter. I know it takes a while to get into from what people are saying, but it has been a life long dream to know that I will be putting out fires and saving peoples lives. Any responses will help me get my career started.

I would suggest the route I took. Become a Reserve or Volunteer, then behave like you wanna be there. be respectful and courteous (especially to the Chief and any officer) do your part; ask for training; help clean the apparatus; say "lemme try that" you'll be surprised how far that goes. Don't be macho, don't have a "thin skin" TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN and you'll be slayin the dragon in no time!
