I've been there for almost 8 years. Take my advice
    GO TO CHARLOTTE
Charlotte has a much better retirement plan, and they're paying much better as well.

Things are a changing for the GFD, for better or for worse remains to be seen. The present Chief is scheduled to retire at the end of the May 2008. There are no clues as to who the City's administrators will choose for a replacement.

As far as applicants go, the first ones that seem to get hired are the "favorites." This includes the minorities and "kin-folk" that are chosen from the applicant pool. I don't have the facts on hand at the moment, but statistically, they hire minority applicants at a rate much higher than that of white males. I can back this up with facts if you like.

Next comes the budget. The city is struggling to maintain the level of services without raising taxes. This means we likely get no raises in the coming year, but ironically, they have adequate funds to purchase a fleet of new Chevy Tahoes for the Chiefs. The City Admin asked for each Dept head to recommend some positions to cut. The GFD is losing a couple of positions, but the people are not being laid off, they are being transferred to other divisions, thus there will be less overtime paid out in that division to maintain services. By the way, the GFD has NEVER laid off a single employee.

About the organizational culture: It's more important for your truck to be clean than for it to be operational. For example, if your primer is broken, it's acceptable to wait a few days for a repair. But if it's dirty, the world will stop turning if you don't wash it. Ever check out firenews.net? There are pictures and stories of Fire Depts accross the Carolinas fighting fires and saving lives. With few exceptions, the only pictures of Greensboro Fire is where the crews are washing the trucks. http://www.firenews.net/headlines/?s=greensboro

And most act like the City is an island. It's as if our leaders believe the problems we face are unique to us and no one else. Thus if someone else has already encountered this problem, it is better for us to reinvent the wheel than mimic someone else's successful solution.

It wasnít long ago that we started carrying sub-Q epinephrine injections for anaphylaxis. Other Deptís were carrying them 10 years ago or more. We only recently started carrying oral glucose. Thatís something that the Mayberry Fire Dept (pun) was doing 20 years ago. And we still don't use any type of advanced airway device.

Benjamin Franklin wrote that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. That description fits Greensboro to a tee. We have an Attention Deficit Disorder style of management that focuses on the Emperorís New Clothes.

Example: We were once allowed to have Station specific designs on our duty T-shirts. After spending our own money to buy them, Admin suddenly pulls a 180 and declares they can no longer be worn. That does nothing to support the pride and ownership of the Dept. And in case they didn't notice, we were actually buying part of our uniforms, thus saving the City money. Maybe someday someone will show me a flowchart that explains things like this.

    Default Update to this?

How are things looking in Greensboro now? I'm thinking of putting in an application. Does anyone have anything positive to say about the department? I don't want to base anything off of what one lone person says on a message board 6 months ago

    Default new ideas

Anyone have any new thoughts about Greensboro? It looks like their old chief has resigned...have things changed for the better yet? I am looking at applying but want to see how the moral is at the department.

    Thanks...

Things have gotten much better. The buddy system has been derailed. And an emphasis on objectivity, and transparency, are being pushed by our new Chief.
