Credit checks...

OK, a quick question for those of you who have been through the process since I'm just starting out. The credit checks that the departments run, what all are they looking for? Are they willing to hear out your explanation? And are there any things that would automatically DQ you? I only ask due to the fact that when I first moved out following school, I did have some rough times with finances and an unreliable roommate, I just want to know what to expect when they start to drill me on it. Thx for any help.
