Exclamation FEMA Rescinds New Flood Maps For D.C.

When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, Lad, the strongest castle in all of England.

FEMA Rescinds New Flood Maps For D.C.

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency has agreed to rescind maps that declared a large swath of downtown Washington and the National Mall a flood zone.

The maps would have led to stricter building codes that would have complicated construction of new federal and office buildings and forced hundreds of homeowners to buy flood insurance.

FEMA approved the maps in March after a post-Hurricane Katrina analysis by the Army Corps of Engineers determined that a levee system designed to hold back the Potomac River would not be adequate in a major storm. The changes were scheduled to take effect in September.

But in a letter Monday to Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, FEMA announced it was rescinding its decision. The change was made after District of Columbia officials pledged to build a stronger flood control system by November 2009. The city is committing $2.5 million for the work.

Somehow when I read the article a few weeks about FEMA making the initial announcement, and knowing that DC pretty much sits on a swamp..... OF COURSE ITS A FLOOD PLAIN. DUMB*****!

So let's change the maps and pretend that everything's is ok. While we're at it, let's re-write the maps that show New Orleans below sea level. If the map says that a city inside of a bowl below sea level won't flood, it must be true!
