Man Set To Send 3K Pizzas To Iraq. Veteran Calls Program 'Pizzas 4 Patriots'

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. -- Retired Air Force Sgt. Mark Evans said he wanted to send a taste of Chicago to troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.
So he's doing it deep-dish pizza-style.
The Elk Grove Village man arranged for thousands of pizzas to be frozen, packed in dry ice and shipped to the Middle East in time for the Fourth of July. His son, Kent, 16, came up with the idea.
"I think it's good for them. They're in too good of shape," Evans joked.
Evans said DHL Global has volunteered to ship the pizzas that Lou Malnati's Pizzeria offered at a special rate. He said he hopes to get as many as 3,000 pizzas to the troops with the "Pizzas 4 Patriots" program.
"It's saying 'here's a taste of home,"' Lou Malnati's spokeswoman Mindy Kaplan said.
But Kaplan said she suspects there might be some soldiers who won't feel that way.
"Maybe New Yorkers won't like it so much," Kaplan said.

Great idea except it will make the NJ/NY guys vomit. It's like putting tomato sauce on a loaf of Wonder bread.
NY pizza is the only pizza worth eating ever.
But it is a great gesture to support the troops.PROUD, HONORED AND HUMBLED RECIPIENT OF THE PURPLE HYDRANT AWARD - 10/2007.

It arrived in Iraq this morning. Word was when the plane pulled up and began the transfer to the refer trucks the whole area began celebrating. The person who began the project is still taking funds to make another delivery in a short time.
I can speak from first hand experience that after going a while without a good za, the first one can almost be a religious experience.

Even though I had nothing to do with this enterprise, I am in support of it, and that fact that the load arrived safely and is being enjoyed by all is great. Having been on similar deployements myself, parcels from home are always welcome.

Keep yer heads down boyz! You're all doing a tough job under ugly circumstances. Stay safe out there.

I wonder how many guys that are way back out of harms way get to eat these culinary delights, as opposed to the guys dodging IED's and 7.62 x 39 rds all day!

I'm guessing not many Johnny.....
I have been to the Malnati's Pizzeria.....it is outstanding pizza. I'm sure the NY guys would argue with me but I think it's probably the best I have tasted.
Of course, I have not tasted NY pizza yet...........

(Biting my tongue) Trying to stay neutral in this, but I've had both and they both have positives and negatives.
Anyway the pizza was handed out today and there were plenty of pictures of everyone enjoying it sent back and put on the local news tonight. Lots of happy faces in the crowd.
