    Default down lines

In a nut shell what is your SOP's for downed lines (including telephone and cable)? Also does your department have/use a "hot stick"?

If power lines down we establish a safe area and notify the power company. Usually we stand by until their arrival. As for the hot stick it's nice but is it worth taking the chance of one of your people getting zapped?

Block the road, wait for the big yellow trucks.
Even the burger-flippers at McDonald's probably have some McWackers.

Around here the big yellow trucks belong to a neighboring department.

In reality we do something similar. Notify the power company and secure the area. If it's going to be a while, or we're really busy, we'll put tape up and leave. If the electric company is going to be there relatively quickly, we'll wait on them. We don't carry hot sticks.

We operate like the other posters on here. As for the telephone and cable lines (as well as guy-wires), if they are in contact (or even close) to the power lines, we consider them "Hot" and take appropriate actions.
Just someone trying to help! (And by the way....Thanks for YOUR help!)

Aggressive does not have to equal stupid.

Secure the area, call for the power comany.

Put up tape if it's not a safety issue, wait for the power company if it is.

We carry TacSticks. Neat tools, but we can't use them to decide if we can move a line. We carry them more to find lines in areas where it isn't obvious...like structure collapse.

If the wire is on the ground its "hot"! Never used a hot stick for power lines....Ever! Grab a chew and wait on the pole jockeys.
