Question I have a question regarding AFG

I can't find anything on the site so I thought I'd ask the knowledge pool here first.

We applied for new bunker gear and SCBA's along with some training money too. The SCBA we have now I "dumpster dove" for several years back, they are all early 90's vintage.

One of my firefighters was in SWMO on vacation earlier this spring, a certain FD was having a fundraiser type thing he took his kids to when they spotted it in the parking lot, he got to talking to a few of them, their dept. had just bought new SCBA to replace some '04 Drager's , long story short he had them send us a bid proposal, I ended buying 10 packs and 20 spare bottles for a whopping $700 for the whole lot.

If we were to be awarded from AFG do I need to tell them we bought this stuff? I just received notice that they accepted our bid last week and am headed south tomorrow to pick it up, so this all happened long after we submitted the grant proposal this year.

First of all NICE JOB on the used SCBA deal. Man I wish we could score that kind of deal up here in the north woods!

To answer your question, YES, you will have to tell AFG about the SCBA purchase. The 2004 packs will probably void out your request if you receive the grant. If you get your 10 questions one of them will be about obtaining equipment requested in the grant since submitting your application.

If you do not need the newer SCBA I would proactively contact AFG and let them know about your deal. I may be wrong but they would probably appreciate knowing you will have to reject the grant ahead of time instead of wasting their time and energy to process a grant that will not go through.

The important thing here is that you obtained the gear you need for your department so you are safe and can be effective in your responses. Very nice job!

The SCBA wouldn't negate the whole deal would it? We still need decent gear for everybody, some of the stuff we have is 20 years old, some is newer and that was included on the grant. I guess I would just call the help desk and tell them my story and they'll get me to who I need to talk to?

I made sure and tell the people at City Hall to be sure and include us on the bid list next time they have stuff to get rid of!

As 7Stones pointed out, keep them in the loop. Contact your FPS and explain the situation to them. The last thing they want is a surprise. Keeping them informed goes a long way.

To answer your 2nd part, no it would only affect the SCBA part of your application. You could still receive funding for the PPE and training. Also if you bought fewer SCBA than you applied for you could still receive funding for the difference in quantity.

But it does need to be run by your FPS. It can wait until you see the signs of being awarded (1199A or questions), no need to bother anyone if you're not going to potentially be funded.

As Brian said, there's no need at all to really call any attention to your application unless something looks positive towards an award. The folks over there are busy enough trying to keep things rolling.

Question 6a) Since submitting the application referenced herein, has your department purchased any of the items requested in the application? If so, what was purchased, when was it purchased, and why?

This would be in your questionnaire you will receive prior to an award anyway. You can simply explain your situation and say that a situation arose which your department could not pass up ($700 - who would!) and tell them exactly what you told us. There is a chance that the entire award could still come through, if you make a statement on what you will do with the 04s, or most likely you would receive everything except the SCBA. Either way, the options would look good.

Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it, hopefully we'll see an 1199 update soon and I can worry about it then. I'm on my way south so it'll be a couple days before I check in again.

Nice job on finding a low cost solution to your lack of current airpacks.

As SLY said. if you get selected and get the 10 Q;s then you need to explain in detail how you found these used packs & bottles, and what a great deal you got on them. We managed to work a great deal on some dealer demo 07 std. 4.5 packs this year and explained to our grants specialist why we wanted to modify our original approved request to upgrade our older 2216's with HUD & integrated pass. In the discussions they were very impressed with the results of our smart shopping and approved the change.

I guess the question that i wonder is why is a " certain department" getting rid of 4 year old airpacks? did they somehow get federal funding to replace them? I can't imagine anyones budget allowing the department to buy new packs if they have 4 yr. old ones that are perfectly serviceable. $700.00 is a great price for 1 good used 4 y.o. pack and the bottles are worth at least 500.00 ea if they are composite, new are around 850.00 ea.

Not trying to stir the sh@t , just thinking out loud. things that make me go HUNH!

You say "I" ended up buying. If you bought/own the packs and (for example) rent/lease/loan them to the FD would they even exist for the purposes of FG?

And would Drager even be on your list of bidders for new equipment (would not be on mine).
