Advice On Creating a Fire Tax

Any good advice on getting a Fire Tax in our fair city of 6,000 folks off on the right foot? I am wondering if anyone has had good experience or bad experience. (What to do and what to avoid) Thanks!

The best time to try to get a new tax levy created in in times of economic expansion, definately not in a downturn of the economy. In other words, now is a very poor time time to be attempting to initiate a new tax, or to even increase a current one. Most jurisdictions are doing well if they can avoid a cut in the tax levy. Sorry for the bad news, but you should be aware that it may be a very tough battle right now.

Do you want to "create" a fire tax or receive more money from an existing fund? Does the city not provide financial support? Does the department respond outside the city limits? If so, is financial support provided by the non-city residents?
