    Exclamation New Hanover County NC

I'm currently a career FF/EMT for a department in the Myrtle Beach SC area, but I'm looking to relocate to the Wilmington NC area in the future and was just wondering if anyone had any info whether good or bad about New Hanover County FD in North Carolina. Any info at all would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Are you asking specifically about new hanover fire rescue or just depts in the wilmington area?

I'm asking about New Hanover County but I would certainly be open to the possibility of working at any of the Wilmington area departments.....I really want to move to that area and would be willing, to a certain extent, to take a job with any department reasonably close to Wilmington....

The two major fire departments in the wilmington area are nothing special. Unless you have some really good reason to move to the area besides working for one of the departments I would look for other areas.

Wilmington FD is way under paid compared to other similar departments, the cost of living in wilmington is the highest in the state. Also the department is constantly involved with some sort of drama(bad promotions practices, union law suits...) I have never met a wilmington firefighter that was 100% in love with the department, alot of "things are going to change soon", "I'm going to apply with Charlotte next year..." " We might get raises next year", and my personal favorit "if things dont change like the say they are going to im going to leave after the first of the year". If you dont know someone in the department, good luck getting hired...

New Hanover County isnt any better. Starting pay is a small amount better. Unless you are willing to be a "part-time" firefighter with no benifits, you might want to avoid this one. This department has alot of part-timers and they dont take care of them at all, really low pay. Some good guys, some ok guys, some not very smart guys, and afew idiots. But if you really want to be in the wilmington area, they are about to hire in jan.

I look forward to reading the aftermath this message will create

    Go to Charlotte.

    Higher Pay. Better retirement.

Anyone else headed to Wilmington at the end of the month? I'm not sold on the department by any means, but I'm still really wanting to relocate to Wilmington and I think it's worth the hour or so drive to see what they're all about

Sorry I forgot all about this thread I meant to reply months ago but yea Jake pretty much summed it up. WFD is severely underpaid and the overall firefighter moral within the department is about as low as it gets. On top of this they just recently got a new fire chief so who knows what will happen. I would wait some time to see how the new fire chief works to improve the dept.

New Hanover Fire is largely part timers, poor benefits, and organization could be better. You also will get moved around within dept's around the county a lot.

I lived in wilmington for awhile so I know a lot of WFD and NHF fireman and I looked into applying for both depts. One of my friends worked part time for New Hanover and I will give you an example of his experiences working with the dept; He shows up for work one day and they ask him what he is doing and he is like I'm working today, the station didn't know he was working that day.

I ran into the officer in charge of hiring for NHF and told him that my friends had told me they were hiring but that I checked their website and it stated that they were not currently hiring for any positions. I asked him if he was aware that the dept website was not correct and he stated that he was not. Just for the hell of it I filled out an interest card and randomly almost a year later they send me an e-mail asking me if I was still interested in applying.

What are your reasons for wanting to move to wilmington? The cost of living is extremely high, not a lot of good paying jobs in the city, traffic around the city is horrible, the area around downtown is very bad, ghetto with lots of crime and violence, and the living costs for houses and apartments is horrible, unless you have a good paying job you will only find a cheap house in the ghetto or will be living in a tiny apartment surrounded by loud college kids partying until 5 am. If you are hell bent coming to the area consider living in Leland Nice area that is not to far from wilmington which is booming like crazy and the fire dept is doing some major expanding to meet these increased demands.

Wilmington is an amazing place like no other. I would like nothing better then to raise my family here. Teach my kids to surf, and give them the childhood I had living on the coast. But if you are serious about a career in the fire service, there are very few opportunities in this area that are legitimate… Basically none.
