Default just how political is fdny?

I'm looking forward to taking the test in 2011, but am also dreading the politics of the job. I am one of the many minorities (chinese) who are not only hoping to be a FF, but to also grow within the department. Is it difficult for someone of my ethnicity to obtain a position such as Lieutenant - Chief? I keep getting put down by my peers who are telling me I don't fit the ''criteria for promotion'' in other words, im not white. -_- Is this true?

In the fire service, if anyone gets preference, its minorities. So don't worry about it. Work hard and you will get what you deserve.

Don't let anyone EVER tell you what you can and cannot accomplish in your life. NOBODY has the right to determine your future, other than yourself. If we all listened to other people we would never get out of bed.

I am condifent that FDNY, or any other department, would be proud to have a competent, capable fire officer whether he is Chinese, Hispanic, African American, female, or white.

My recommendation to you is to control what you can control. Don't get hung up on what other people tell you that you cannot accomplish.

It is a load of sh*t.

How does a traffic agent get her job...civil service exam.
How does a School safety officer get her job...civil service exam.
How does a SanMan get his job....civil service exam.
How does a Policeman get his job...Civil service exam.
How does a Fire Marshall get his job... Civil service promotional exam.
How does a Sgt. get his job....Civil service promotional exam.

They are all listed in the same place and promotions are open to everyone...this isn't Mississippi 1937.

Promotions are strictly based on civil service promotions using standardized exams. (They are all conducted by DCAS NOT the FDNY, pretty hard to rig promotions you don't control.)

We are probably the least poltical Dept in the city when it comes to promotions....only recently was our Chief of Dept made into an appointment.

Give it a shot and if you measure up you will get hired just like everyone else. Don't believe the race baiters and bigots who blame everyone else for their failures in life.

    Good luck.
