The American Red Cross is begging for money and supplies. They were on my local news channel last night saying they have run out of money. They said this was because they spend what they had helping victims of the Hurricane that hit New Orleans just a few weeks ago. Two major events so close together has left their bank accounts empty. They are currently taking out bank loans to cover the short fall until more donations are received.

I went down to Gustav and then Ike as part of a huge EMS effort for FEMA. I was stationed in Texas both times.
For Gustav we move a lot of non-ambulatory patients hundreds of miles north, only to turn around later and haul them all back.

In Ike, we started to do the same thing, this time with more urgency of course because of the direction it was headed. Until we were "Commandeered" by local Police for 15 hours without authorization from FEMA!

Life was tough enough, 30 hours drive there, 96 degree heat, RMEs for food, staying in a dust bowl at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, but to be basically kidnapped by local yahoo cops was just wrong.

Who the heck do Texas Police think they are? It finally ended when the National Commander for Fema called me and told me to get out of there as I was in "Imminent Danger of Death!" and sent the State Police to get us out of there.
Next hurricane? Texas? Thanks but no thanks.

Wow, Chiefy! Those local cops can be bad. I wish they would have let you do what you came for, as we really could have used the extra hands down here in Galveston.

Chiefy- Why did they feel your life was in danger? I don't think the cops would have done anything.

I worked in Galveston and Bolivar and there were some definite bureaucratic nightmares but I never thought my life was in danger. You must have been in some weird predicament.
