I have no good words for this day
I have no way to explain what happened in a way that makes sense
Instead I remember the fallen
What they gave
What was taken
What was lost
Their lives
I would like to THANK all here for your support and Remembrance of are BROTHERS who lost their lives on September 11, 2001...this thing called BROTHERHOOD runs deep, Never Forget we are all part of this.

I can understand the disappointment in media coverage and the gradual disappearance of 9-11 tributes. They still have a remembrance service in Alberta, but I think it will gradually disappear over time. Its simply that the public is continually inundated with news, mostly bad, that they become inured to the past. I'm sure there are many in both the US and Canada that wish more was done on Nov 11, Dec 7, June 6, May 8, Aug 15. Time, unfortunately dulls the pain and remebrance of many tragedies.

9/11 Moment of Silence in East Islip, NY Elemetary Schools
To: Patriotic Americans
The East Islip School District Superintendent, Mr. Wendell Chu unilaterally decided that he would not allow elementary schools within his district to have a moment of silence in memory of 9/11. He implemented this on the 8th Anniversary of this cowardly attack on our country. East Islip is located less than 50 miles from Ground Zero. Many families in our district lost parents and loved ones on 9/11.
There was no warning to parents prior to 9/11/09. I first found out about this at a Timber Point PTA meeting at on 9/14/09. There was also no warning from the principals of any of the schools. This despite the schools ability to quickly contact each parent via a telephone message or official letter to each child's home.
I immediately contacted Mr. Chu via e-mail. He admitted that this was his personal decision.
This is what he had to say:
"Most of the children in our elementary schools were very young on September 11, 2001 and some were not even born yet. I believe that parents should be the ones to broach the subject of this day with their children. I feel that young students need to feel safe and secure, understand that bad things happen, but feel that these events are very rare, and the human spirit does amazing things in the face of adversity. Our students' preparation for thoughts about these issues varies greatly and my decision was really a desire to be sensitive to the feelings of parents, not a desire to ignore the day." He says this despite not warning the parents that he had no plans to honor our country with a simple moment of silence and a lack of discussion in the classroom.
Do you agree with his statement? If he wanted parents to "broach" the subject, then he should have warned the parents. He goes on to say that he wants to be "sensitive to the feelings of parents." He sounds like a politician that wants to see how the public feels before making a decision. I am sorry, but there is no decision here.
In the past all of the elementary schools had a special moment of silence and then sang "God Bless America." I feel this was appropriate and do not feel a child would be harmed or afraid by this. In fact, it would probably bring out feelings and thoughts that could be shared in the classroom. This never happened.
What upsets me most is that there was no warning that he would handle the day this way. I personally would have kept my son out of elementary school on 9/11/09.
Mr. Wendell Chu did find it important enough to allow the middle school and high school to have a moment of silence, and 9/11 was discussed in the classroom. Thank you Mr. Chu!
I respectfully requested that Mr. Chu give an apology to each person in our district (he did not acknowledge this) and let us know how he will treat 9/11 in the future (should he still be our Superintendent).
He indicated that he would "re-consider the way we remember 9/11 as a district and a community" but that he would "take it up at some later point in the year in preparation for next year's anniversary."
I do not see what was wrong with what was done in the past: 1) having a moment of silence and 2) singing "God Bless America." Is a special committee and months of meetings and discussions really necessary? I think this decision can be be saved from the bureaucratic BS and Mr. Chu can save us the anxiety of awaiting his decision. It wasn't broke, so there was no reason to fix it!
Mr. Chu ends his last e-mail with "I just want to get a better sense of how others feel." Please take a moment and let Mr. Chu know how you feel. Sign this petition. Share it with every patriotic American you know. Feel free to send Mr. Chu your feelings. His e-mail is: wchu@eischools.org.
His office phone number is 631-224-2010.
Please sign this petition if you think that Elementary Schools in the East Islip School District should have a moment of silence to remember 9/11.
God Bless America.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned http://www.petitiononline.com/2242010/petition.htmlALL GAVE SOME BUT SOME GAVE ALL

Thanks E40FDNYL35 for this information.9/11 Moment of Silence in East Islip, NY Elemetary Schools
Doesn't this story sound much like another "we have to be careful about who might offend".
Well I am offended and I am sure he didn't even know I existed. I am sure many of you are as offended as I am. I know E40 is offended.
Maybe we should ask him if he ever thought that by saving these kids the burden of paying tribute to our fallen brothers, he might actually offend a few thousand guys who do give a damn?

Firefighters, or firemen, are rescuers extensively trained primarily to put out hazardous fires that threaten civilian populations and property, to rescue people from car accidents, collapsed and burning buildings and other such situations. The increasing complexity of modern industrialized life with an increase in the scale of hazards has stimulated both advances in firefighting technology and a broadening of the firefighter-rescuer's remit. They sometimes provide emergency medical services. The fire service, or fire and rescue service also known in some countries as the fire brigade or fire department, are some of the emergency services. In some countries, including Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Sweden and the United States, there are often paid, or professional career firefighters working. Additionally, there are volunteer firefighters (who are theoretically unpaid) and retained firefighters (sometimes called on call firefighters, who are paid for the specific time they are on duty, i.e. permanent part-time career firefighters) on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In such countries as the United Kingdom and Ireland, the use of additional retained firefighters is standard. In Portugal, the use of volunteer firefighters is standard, along with career firefighters.
In Australia there are volunteer brigades which are mostly unpaid rural services (although traditionally they are paid by their employers if called out during working hours).
In Germany, volunteer fire departments, called the "Freiwillige Feuerwehr", are established in every town: even the biggest German city, Berlin, with more than 3.6 million inhabitants, has volunteer firefighters besides a career fire service. In fact, only 100 German cities (most of them are towns with more than 100,000 inhabitants) have a career fire service, called the "Berufsfeuerwehr," but in every one of these cities a volunteer fire service exists, too. In cities with a career fire service, volunteer fire brigades support the career fire service at big fires, accidents and disasters. Many of the so-called volunteer departments (usually in towns with 35,000 to 150,000 inhabitants), except in very small towns and villages, are a mixed service of a core of career firemen who are supported by true volunteer firefighters should the need arise. However, the official title of those departments is nevertheless "volunteer fire service".
----------------------------------------------------
Firefighting and firefighters have become ubiquitous around the world, wildland areas to urban areas, and on board ships. Firefighters are held in high regard around the world. This causes firefighting to be one of the five trusted public service professions.Last edited by webteam; 01-09-2010 at 02:11 PM. Reason: Advertising not allowed

February 28, 2010 -- A lawyer in two Ground Zero sickness cases green-lighted for trial says he has a smoking gun: buried city documents that prove firefighters should have gotten respirators. The papers emerged in a veritable mountain of files the city turned over to workers who believe they were sickened by toxins after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Lawyer Andrew Carboy, whose firm represents more than 600firefighters, said the FDNY had rules on the book requiring Bravest be equipped with respirators before Sept. 11. But memos showing that weren't handed over until this summer - in a data dump of 3 million documents - five years after the legal battle began. "They provide everyone with helmets, with bunker gear, with [air] packs. They could have done the same with respirators, and they withheld the documents saying they had a program to do it," Carboy said.Carboy's firm represents Firefighters Frank Malone and the late Raymond Hauber, whose cases are among a dozen picked to go to trial, starting in May. Four were chosen from more than 9,000 by a federal judge, four by the city, and four by plaintiffs' lawyers. More than $1 billion in damages hinge on the outcome. To show the city is liable, Carboy plans to wield memos about the FDNY's "respiratory protection program," which was supposed to provide respirators for "reasonably foreseeable emergency situations" like building collapses. The FDNY didn't follow its own guidelines and had only 600 respirators for more than 11,200 uniformed members when the twin towers fell Sept. 11, Carboy said. A 2003 FDNY memo called for the head of safety and health for the department, Tennyson Headley, to be canned in part because of the dysfunctional respirator program. But Headley is still on the FDNY payroll. In a Feb. 5 deposition, he admitted he didn't know the FDNY had a program until well after 9/11, or that he was responsible for making sure firefighters were trained to use the masks. The city's lawyers deny the memo was hidden, saying documents about the program were "irrelevant" because a separate respirator policy was created for Ground Zero after the attacks. On Sept. 11, the FDNY ordered 5,000 respirators for $20 to $25 each, court documents say.

08/05/10 New York - Family and friends said their final farewells this morning to a 9/11/01 hero who lost his battle with cancer. Vinny Albanese was laid to rest this morning at St. Hugh of Lincoln Church in Huntington Station. The city firefighter died of bladder cancer on Saturday. Albanese's family says he was sickened by the toxic dust from Ground Zero. “His final request to us was please do everything you can do to make sure these men and women are taken care of,” his daughter Kelly says. The first responders health care bill was rejected in the U.S. House last week.
