Default Iowa Professional Firefighters welcome 9/11 Tour

The 10 Yr 9/11 Manhattan to Manhattan Tour has been underway since January of this year and has already visited with over 125 fire departments including; Davenport, Chicago, Rockford, Philadelphia and Baltimore coming up on August 2nd.

I think this TV news story out of the Iowa Professional Firefighters convention captures the essence of the tour and its mission: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGxIui6rp5w

Please consider stepping up to support this 10 Year 9/11 Fellowship and fund raising tour. More info here: http://www.9-11patchproject.org/10-year-plans.html

    Ray,

Thanks for posting the members who were murdered. That is what I was trying to do on the earlier post and I guess I had too much bytes for it to take.

    Hang in there Brother!

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.

Default Feb 93 and Sept 2001

I am not a firefighter but a retired electrician. In Feb of 93 I was working in the north tower when the bomb exploded in the basement. It was lunch time and only three of us were on the floor. Within two minutes smoke had traveled up the elevator shafts and blew open the low rise elevator machine room doors on our floor. We garbed a flashlight a rags just before the smoke engulfed us and blindly felt along the hall walls for a stair case. Reaching the door and gasping for air I pulled on the nob only to find it being held shut from in side the stair well, someone welling "your letting the smoke in". In as calm a voice as I could manage I explained that if they did not let us in to the staircase we would die. The door opened. We pushed our way in and closed the door(which locked behind us)behind us. For a moment I thought I was safe until the same smoke started coming up the stairs. We gave out the rags we had to the woman around us, no one said a word, we just waited and hoped. It became dark with smoke and I remember looking at the handkerchief I was holding to my mouth and nose. The outside of it was covered with soot that looked like tar, I remember at that point realizing that we were probably going to die. Slowly we started moving down the stairs and after thirty minutes of slow progress and many floors lower the staircase door next to me opened and standing their was a fireman. At that point I realized that we were going to be alright.
I remember all the emergency personal forming a human coral in the lobby to funnel us to the west entrance, the glass that exploded around us as we ran from the building, and the throngs of camera's filming us from across west street. I remember that young fireman standing in the door way looking up at the ceiling.

I heard the jet go by as I unloaded a truck on 41st street and 7th ave. I was so loud it hurt my ears. A few minutes later we learned that the Trade Center was hit by a jet. I was on the phone with the New York blood bank telling them to get a truck down to our job so we could donate blood when the second plane hit.....I than realized we were under attack. We evacuated the job but instead of heading home I kept my hardhat on and headed down town. People helped me in 93 and now they needed help. I joined up with 30 other construction workers by city hall a short time after the second tower collapsed. There was a deep muffled explosion from the west, police coming out of the area covered on powder, some vomiting. Someone formed us into a column and told us to march down to Beakman to give blood but on the way their someone handed out dust masks and gloves and told us we were going in. We ended up on Church street the smoke and dust being so thick we were not able to see or breath for that matter. Cars were burning, glass fell from buildings around us as we began to circle around to the north west. Unfortunately I stepped on something and twisted my right leg at the hip and found I would no longer walk very well. I wanted to do more but I could just barley walk out of the area. Three weeks later I was diagnosed with walking pneumonia. I wished I could have done more, but as it was All those brave men and thousands of innocent people were gone. I will never forget the people that run into burning buildings. You saved us in 93 and died for us in 2001.

RIP to the 343 who answered the call one last time.

I will say that the FDNY on 9/11 inspired me to pursue firefighting.

Myself and my Brothers will be climbing at the Denver Stair Climb this 9/11 to remember those that gave all.

Past 2 years I climbed for Marty Demeo- Hazmat 1 & Lt. Carl Bedigian- Engine 214. RIP Brothers...

If anyone hasn't had a chance to participate in one of the several climbs around the US I would highly recommend it. Check here for one near you. May be too late for this year as these fill up fast, but something to think about for next year. Sorry for the hijack.

I will do the same thing I do every year on that date. Take a few moments in silence to reflect on those that were lost and those that continue to pay the price everyday since then. I organized a small gathering at one of my volly houses for the Tenth Anniversary and read the timeline of events that day.

My son, also a member of the 2 volly FDs I am on is taking one of our engines to a neighboring community to participate in a Memorial Silent Parade. I may attend but may be involved at my former career FD with another event.

Believe me when I say to you this horrific day is NEVER far from my thoughts and though I wouldn't come close to comparing what I feel to what you feel, I will never forget the horror of sitting around the kitchn table that morning and watching the events unfold. We all hoped and prayed that the Brothers would get out, but in the back of our minds we knew. We knew the Brotherhood had lost hundreds in the blink of an eye.

I bought all kinds of books after that, I wanted to be able to help my grandkids understand what happened, but to be brutally honest, I can't look at them yet, I have tried, but I can't. I don't mean to sound corny, or phony, or insincere here, but it is all too close, all too personal and I never met a single one of the guys that died that day. I knew of many of them by reputation, by their articles, videos, and books. I guess that is what the Brotherhood means, even if we don't know each other we are all connected and the pain of loss, although different, affects us all.

I hope you know what I am trying to say. I hope it came across as respectful and sincere, because it is.

Rest in Peace to those that have and will pay the price for that day and the months afterwards.
Crazy, but that's how it goes
Millions of people living as foes
    Maybe it's not too late
To learn how to love, and forget how to hate
