Where to buy a used (fire) extension ladder?

Hi everyone -

Any thoughts on where I can buy a used Duo Safety 24' extension ladder?

Currently going through probation, want to spend some extra time on my ladder work.

I'm willing to buy new from Duo Safety direct, but would prefer to buy used if possible. The ONLY concern I have regarding used is whether or not it is safe to use.

if you are looking just to get something to practice on, there is nothing wrong wit just getting a any old brand ladder at sears. or do you want to get that exact brand?

I practice at work too. However, my goal is to become a become a master at throwing ladders. As much work as possible, especially on my off days. Problems with going in on my off days are a) potential "off duty" work issues (not sure if our local is OK with it - I'll have to ask) and b) taking a rig out of service by pulling a ladder off.

Plus, I figure a good safety ladder would last me a lifetime for later projects (painting, etc.).

An extension ladder is an extension ladder is an extension ladder .... You can throw ir the same as an alco-lite, duo safety or any other fire service rated ladder... the mechanics are the same.

What you want to buy and what you want to use it for is like buying a used aerial to practice driving and placement!

Believe it or not, yes, this is for real.

I was "thinking out loud" on ways to practice my ladder work on off days when I'm not at the station.

Sounds like a trip to Sears might be a wise thing (before dropping some cash on a Duo Safety).

If you want to get good throwing ladders find a side job that involves ladder work like siding our window washing. trust me you will become very comfortable with them. plus you will make some cash.

When I was in the academy, ropes and knots and I had a bit of a disagreement. I just used a 20 foot piece of rope that I got from a store that was selling remnants, (I think it was Whistle Workwear in Puyallup), and then used a homeowner type extension ladder. I came up with an axe and some other tools that we had to hoist to the roof. It was time well spent. Though I tossed the cheap onld extension ladder after getting used to the FD ones. I just found another real good ladder at Home Depot or McLendons.

A FD ladder is overkill, but we have surplused them in the past, (I got a roofer for 20 bucks). We could hardly give the 35s away. Surplus is the way to go.

Keep an eye on www. publicsurplus.com. Many municipalities list surplus stuff on that site for online auction. Also EBAY too.

You could also scout round for one of these
