no, anyone can go to a truck. you just ride the rear step. obviously the officer is a promotion (lt ot capt) but the driver and tillerman is also a promotion. they are called emergency vehicle drivers. so basically everyone but the stepman is promoted. the breakdown is this:
officer forces door and searches
driver go to roof and does verticle ventilation
tillerman throws ground ladders ventilates and searches
stepman throws ground ladders ventlates and searches
the stepman will also over time become approved to drive and tiller. this way when an EVD is off the stepman can fill in. also you will become approved to act as a lt. so when the lt is off you can fill in. its nice because when you act in those positions you get that pay rate for the day.

How about Engine Duties too... who does what on the Engine?
And how are transfers handled? If you're on E1 and want to go to T2 can that happen? If so how?

officer- assists pipeman with laying out hose and hose advancement
pump operator- drives and operates pump
pipeman- puts out the fire!!!
lead off- hooks up to plug
you may transfer after one year from the academy. you fill out the paperwork and it goes up the chain of command.

Sounds like a great department. What are the chances of a vet getting hired on with a good test score.

Is there any residency or veterans points added on in Baltimore, I know a lot of cities will add on 5 points to your score for residency and then 5 points for vets, assuming you qualify? Some cities also put all vets at the top of the list as long as they passed, does Baltimore follow into this category?
Thanks for any help guys.

I was trying to figure that out myself because I was told that they no longer did that by some people. I called FD HR (410 396 3095) twice and the first time a woman didn't know what I was talking about. The second time someone else said, "I think they don't do that anymore". So who knows. I'm thinking they don't.
