    Default Community Service

Being that our FD is in a very "urban" setting we get many children, (under the age of 18) coming to our station looking to do community service for their probation. Currently we interview these people and find out what was done and make a dicision based on a few factors. They then come down every monday and clean the trucks, outside of the station, and so on. Currently we are looking for more ideas for these kids to do. Many of them just made bad choices and it's really rewarding seeing how some of them are now trying to make a difference. Anyone have anything "fun" that we might be able to try one week instead of the same old cleaning?

I wouldn't consider it "fun", but we had a person do some painting, then there is always the cleaning of hand tools with soap and water.

How about stripping a hosebed, sweep it out, and repack.
Emptying and cleaning out the compartments.

This sounds EXACTLY like my fire company. We have a bunch of community service people come to our firehouse to clean it up and such. We have a few law enforcement officers on our company so we're able to efficiently acquire their services and things get done around the firehouse - sweeping, dusting, vacuuming (carpet, gear lockers, etc.), wiping down counters and such, and they even do weeding around the outside of our firehouse.

We also have our county's HazMat building on our fire company's property so soon enough we'll have them help clean up and around there as well. There's a little more dangerous "stuff" in and around the HazMat building, though, so they'll probably have to be watched a little more closely.

We have brought up having them wash the trucks, clean out the trucks, clean equipment, and so on.

How about having them install infant car seats.

Our station shares a building with the police and district court, so community service workers are in no short supply. However, since we have no clue what crime they've committed... we don't trust them with our part of the station or our equipment.
