Excuse my utter ignorance, but what on earth does the State Constitution have to do with pensions?

    Default COn Con

What does it have to do with Pensions?

If the vote to call for Con Con is successful it will give the opportunity to rewrite the laws of Illinois. With that the Article 4 section (our pension laws) can be disimated. They could take away the defined benefits wording and insert defined Contributions like a 401K. YES, just like the IML is pushing. That would be a disaster for FF all over the state. Your pension benefit would be based on how well your investments do over your career. I myself like the guarantee of 30/50= 75% of my salary.

I have not heard one good reason to call for a Con Con.

All Firefighters and Police Officers need to vote NO for Con Con

I'm not really sure what the comment about side jobs was about but: I'm all for protecting my benefits in the downstate Article 4 pension fund as I'm sure every firefighter in the state outside of Chicago is concerned about.

If the Con Con is approved it virtually opens everything up including our pension plan. The article 4 plan could be eliminated and replaced with a defined contribution plan ie 401k.

Police, Fire and Teachers should all be voting NO

There hasn't been a constitutional convention in this state since 1970.
The state constitution could use some upgrading.
Everyone has their reasons for opposing that. Everyone has their self-interests.
But, the only way we are going to clean up politics in this state is to start there by giving state legislators the right to throw out the governor or anyone for that matter.
I saw the notices on the pension issues and it made me wonder if it wasn't a scare tactic since the Democrats want to stay in power and they know if this issue gets a fair look, it could change the way that they do politics. Historically, the unions are behind Democrat candidates, so...
Is it much ado about nothing or is it legit?
Can someone steer me to the definitive article on it?

Hi, Art, haven't seen you for a while.

Sure the Democrats want to stay in power, but who wants another one like Blago? The problem in Illinois isn't with the constitution, it's with the politicians. The governor doesn't seem to care about the constitution, he tries to do what he wants regardless of what it says.
We just need a new governor that can get along with the legislators.

    El Presidente:
Yeah; I have been somewhere else.
Anyway; I am for an express lane for corrupt politicians or at least the ones merely collecting a pay check and getting them out of state government.
However that is accomplished, count me in.
I am told that it would take a change to the constitution.
If they really want to fire people up, tell them that they are going to take their guns.
That would end it right there.

Hey Art, pension issues aside, there are 100 million reasons not to conevene a CON CON. That is what it will cost to throw that shindig. Add the shenanigans that will occur while electing delegates and it wont really change what is fundamentally wrong with Illinois politics. The constitution can be amended without opening Pandora's Box. It is true the last time it convened was 1970 but that is a mere pittance when compared to the U.S. Constitution.

Not defending Blago, but who wants another Governor like George Ryan ? In this state, dems and republicans are like comparing apples to apples.

It would probably cost alot less than that if the contract didn't go to one of Hot Rod's buddies. Got to pay the other "consultants".
Anyway; if it was so easy to amend the current constitution, one would have to wonder why it hasn't been done, wouldn't one?
Same deal with your pension language. Couldn't that be changed at any given time, as well?
In my mind, no pension should be open for the governor or anyone else to sweep. That money should be untouchable, except for payouts to retirements as it was intended.
    IMHO.
Hey; did I tell you that I'm running for my county board?

Well, the guy that I had pegged as the next governor decided to run for the 18th Congressional District seat.
Aaron Schock would make a great governor.
Even if he's only 24 years old. President of the Peoria School Board at 19.
    State legislator at 21.
Now, he will be a Congressman at 24.
He definitely has it going on.

So adjusting the state constitution is a Good Thing???

No Way, First off the monetary hardship alone would be a reason not to vote, for a state that is supposedly broke who is going to pay?? You, me and our $$$ base for our budgets. Thats all we need more $$ coming out of our pockets to possibly fatten the pockets of the politicians and their backers.

To hear that a recall is the bright light in all of this is CRAP!!! Just vote the bums out. A recall wouldn't even affect BLAGO anyway since he'll won't get re-elected anyway and Emil Jones is retiring. Two of the biggest lumps downstate there is. The state of Chicago is controlled by Daley's cronies so send him the message by Voting them out.

What people aren't realizing is Chicago and Cook will get roughly 45% of the power to control the Con-Con if it gets passed. So you think the state is a democratic stronghold now just wait.

Use your vote wisely and don't bypass the issue. VOTE NO FOR THE CON-CON

Yep, shouldn't have to worry about that for another 10 years.

Mikey, your Chicago guy got elected - you should be happy about that.

    I hear you, Mikey.
I missed getting a seat on the county board by 500 votes.
I guess it wasn't a good year to be a Republican.
    Our school referendum failed AGAIN.
People want a school, they don't want to consolidate, yet don't want to fund their school.
What kind of a message are we sending the kids?
Just another reason to resent the "older" generation.
Oh well; now, I have to get ready for trustee election next year.
