Does your post/sponsering Fire Department allow you to ride out on emrgency appuratus from the firehouse?
Yes we do. Officer's can make us stay on board if they don't think we need to see something... but that's yet to happen to me.
Our post does allow explorers to ride along and go on calls with the firefighters. We are required to have completed a 1 year probationary. During that time we are checked off on basic skills such as basic EMS (pulse, BP, respiration, LOC, First Aid, CPR, C-Spine, and a few other things that I can't remember off the top of my head). Also we learn an assortment of fire ground operations (roll hose, make a hydrant, operate hose lines, clean up).
Now even though we know this... AT NO TIME are we expected or required to put any of this knowledge into practice. That does not mean that we can not help carry bags, set up O2, take vitals, or clean up after a fire. (To give a few examples).
Yes. We would ASSIST at the scene (of a fire).
Yes. Our Ride-Along SOG is linked below. It's currently getting some edits done, but nothing major is changing - just the wording of some things - So ignore the edit marks. This is actually an older copy so it doesn't look like this, but it's close enough.

Yes.
After your basic training (44 hours) and only non-emergency mode at the specific request of the Incident Commander.
Yup. You're allowed to go to almost any call. Only exceptions are no going out of town calls (mutual aid, FAST, etc). Also, the officer can decide if you're not allowed to go to a certain call (say a bad crash where they don't want a 14 year old seeing stuff that's not to nice). Other than that, explorers in my post are allowed to ride along and assist with what they can, except within the collapse zone, wearing a pack, etc.
but the Explorers don't always like those decisions. ;)Quote:

Yes. Only calls they are prohibited from going on are mutual aid calls out of town.
Yup but there is certain calls we can't go on.

We never were able to ride the apparatus until about a year ago and I still learned alot in the 3-4 years before we were allowed to ride. So dont think that riding the apparatus is the only way you will learn.
Yes we are allowed to respond with appratus and wait to get orders once on location.
we can ride out for 24 hours and go to any call. Medical, fire, strike team, you name it we can go on it. we can ride in any vehicle that has room for us, truck, squad, MA, quint, ladder, water tender. Ive even road on a helicopter.
how many times has this been brought up in here now?...If it's not blue lights, it's something along the lines of what juniors can do....I vote for making a topic a sticky...
So? Who cares. It is a legitimate topic of discussion for juniors. How many threads do us adults have about nozzles or apparatus shapes?
Or about helmets, vollie vs. career, and terminology.
Back off and let the juniors talk. Discussion and disagreement is a good thing.
Remember, they will be us one day.
I think it is a perfectly legitimate topic of discussion. The same topics are repeated over and over in the adult FF sections without complaint. Let them have a discussion about it. Geez.
There's a thin line between things that are talked about just way too much and things that could be discussed more. Why is it that every time someone brings something up that's on that thin line, someone has to jump on them? I agree with the last few posters so far - this is a topic that's not old and department's ride-along SOGs/policies can change and the changes could be jurastic(sp?).
