Exclamation What state is currently hiring the most firefighters

Im Firefighter 1 and 2 certified and certified in some confined space and ropes rescue. I have my EMT license and am going to get my paramedic and finish up with my associates as a FireFighter/Paramedic

Recently i have been getting discouraged about finding a job when im finished from rumors that i hear and seeing all the people going for jobs here in michigan the economy is down and was wondering if its the same for the rest of the country for firefighters

The good news- The state of California is hiring the most FFs and FF/PMs.

The bad news- Your non-CA certs wont work here.

There are also a lot of positions in Florida and Washington state.

Best source for jobs I have found- www.firerecruit.com

    Good luck.

Come to Glynn County GA. Located in Southeast GA on the coast.
You would be interviewed and working in less than 10 days.

When fire is cried and danger is neigh,
    "God and the firemen" is the people's cry;
But when 'tis out and all things righted,
God is forgotten and the firemen slighted.

If it is feasible to you, I would check out Washington State.

Many departments are going through a retirement phase, and numerous others are staffing/making transition from combination to career only. You will find it very easy to manage your testing - many departments test through consortiums.

Testing here is very competitive, but the ratio of jobs to applicants is good. This is not a paramedic oriented state (for entry level positions), so you will find many opportunities requiring only an EMT-B to test. I personally know of several people who moved here from out of state in pursuit of career opportunites, and successfully obtained them. Two of them spent years testing in California, came up here and were hired within a year.

The weather here is preferrable for firefighting. Very little freezing weather, mild summers. While it does rain frequently for a substantial period of the year, the summers are beautiful, and the recreation opportunities are unlimited.

The economy is comparatively good. Not immune to the national economic trends, but better than most places (Michigan especially). Cost of living is higher than other regions, but still reasonable. Most departments work 24's, so you can easily live in a more affordable/nice area, a little further out if needed. If you have a good overall "life skillset", you will find it very easy to find work at a decent rate/salary while you test.

The state is a very good place to raise a family. I believe the school systems are good (even with gripes about WASL testing). Crime rates are very low.

The fire service here is very healthy. Most departments have extensive and progressive training programs. Some of the most progressive ideas in the fire service have come form the Pacific Northwest (and the west coast as a whole). While there are departments that are better than others, I think you will find, as a whole, this is a great place to learn your craft.

Pay scales are very competitive. State pension program is decent. If you do a responsible job of outside investing/saving retirement you should be good. You will find it is very possible to have a good standard of living working as a firefighter.

    Thanks -

    PHC
